why would I ever really need or want to load 147 gr 9mm
« on: February 16, 2017, 12:22:20 AM »
I mean, do some folks think this is some magic weight and bullet or something? It is still 9mm DUDE! Get over it!

The heavier, longer bullet presents issues. Yes it can be done, but REALLY?

I just see no point at all. A 9 mm was not designed for 147 and 124/5 just works soo well I have found no reason to use anything else, other than cheap 115 practice ammo.

Perhaps I just shun unnecessary problems in a search for the feel good factor, but when you really just want to go with what works, why deviate? O0

I do know a couple or pro or semi pro shooters, and they seem to be of the same opinion based upon what they are running, and they burn LOTS of ammo, and I mean lots!

I load 147s for suppressor use. More importantly what about what other people are loading bothers you so much?

All I load is 147's. use them for a Shadow, P01, P09, Scorpion, and a M&P9.

I enjoy the powder puff load over the muzzle flip from the 124's.

If you don't think there is a difference then you haven't shot them back to back. I could really tell a difference. Also when people shoot my guns they usually grin and laugh at how soft they are.

I reload for fun bullets and blasting ammo. I'll stay with 147's. plus they are subsonic for my can.

The muzzle velocity is 890 feet per second. Have shot
147 RN and enjoy to the max. Have 135 FN and that is
acceptable. And finishing off 115 RN. Freedom Munitions
told me 135 FN had best ballistics. To me, subsonic
is more accurate and enjoyable.

I've still got a lot (really, a lot) of 147 grain 9MM bullets left over from the M&P days.  That bullet weight gave me the best groups from my M&P 9MM FS pistol.  I have lead, coated lead and hollow points.

So far I've not had any of those loads shoot worth beans in any of my 9MM pistols.  The new Compact actually does better with the 147 grain lead bullets than any of 6 or 7 other CZ 9MM guns we have in the family.  But I've got some load development ahead of me.  Right now, the 115 grain loads shoot better groups for me, from the CZs than the 147's.

If they pass the Hearing Protection Act (maybe even if they don't) I'd like to get a suppressor.  Both the Pre B CZ 85 and the P01 have threaded barrels.  The 147's, subsonic, would be good for that.

Yeah, without reaming the chambers a bit to lengthen them the use of 147's in a CZ is more of a problem than most other 9MM handguns.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

A 147gr TC coated lead bullet with 3.1gr of Bullseye loaded to between 1.165 - .170 works perfectly in my three CZs.  Have loaded and shot many thousands of them.

I never have any issues shooting my 168gr SWC 9mm bullets  ;D tho 147 or 124gr seem to shoot just as good.

Actually, to answer the question why would you. The short answer a bullet with a longer bearing surface has a better chance of accuracy. But I'm sure there are other reasons. But your mileage may vary as all guns can vary.

Yes magical penetration!  A slow heavy 147gr plows right through bone.  Compare your +p 115gr HP to a 147gr HST, etc. on a pork shoulder roast bone in for yourself and report back.

Since it is my preference for SD, I'll shoot my share of 147gr for practice as well.  If I want the tightest groups on paper for my full size CZ I'll shoot 9mm NATO (124).

Why:

Many competitors prefer 147 gr bullets over fast powders.  In uspsa,  125 Power Factor (PF) is the minimum speed allowed. To be sure to make the minimum,  competitors load a little faster just to be sure.

147 gr X  bullet speed (over a chronograph) / 1000 = P.F.   147gr X 850 fps / 1000 = 125PF
Adding a little to be sure to make PF may be 860 FPS.

Over a light load of fast powder,  this is a mouse gas load with less recoil/muzzle flip that some competitors prefer.  With less recoil and muzzle flip,  some can shoot faster and more accurately.  It also knocks down steel targets reliably.
The heavier bullet accelerates in the barrel 'slower' than the lighter bullets = less felt recoil.

Every pistol will have it's favorite load combination for that individual shooter.

I started shooting 147 gr 9mm bullets because they were the only weight that would reliably cycle the heavy blowback bolt of a 9mm carbine, during its break-in period.  Plus, three of my 9mm weapons (soon to be four) are suppressor hosts, and the 147 gr 9mm bullets are slow and quiet suppressed.  With the help of some of the good folks here, I was able to develop a load with N-340 that shoots soft and clean, providing tight groups out of my P-09, with and without the suppressor.

You may never need or want 147 gr 9mm, but I certainly have uses for them.
Take responsibility for your actions.

In addition to the reasons mentioned above, I like to load Zero 147gr JHP bullets because they have rebated bases.  Because of the rebated bases, there's no need to bell the cases or taper crimp.  I also like the fact that the bullet bases have no exposed lead which means that shooting them results in less airborne lead.  Plus, the cost of loading 147gr JHP's is just a hair more than reloading 124gr FMJ's.  It's nice to produce something different.
