Another steel guide rod post

Just an FYI
I dont like plastic guide rods and just bought a Stainless one from SSguideRods.com and was thrilled to see that the one for my compact came with the locating pin/protrusion on the back. Awesome. I was sure it would just be smooth. Second rod I have bought from them through ebay and am thrilled. It was $25.95 shipped.

Have you had problems with the plastic guide rods?

I ask because I have four CZ 75 Compacts (3 CZ 75s and a P01), all with plastic guide rods.  A couple weeks back when I was cleaning two of them I noticed one had a bent guide rod.  Neither has been shot much.  I have no idea why that one is bent.

Is that usually the issue?  Bent plastic guide rods? 

Oh, the oldest of the Compacts has some kind of spiral wound recoil spring in it, like the AK 47 hammer and trigger springs.  Only one I've ever seen like that, but it seems to work (that is not the one with the bent guide rod).

I have only about 200 rds through my compact and the plastic guide rod is chewed up. I will try and get pix tomorrow. I have read through the countless rod threads and the issues if any seems to affect the aluminium frames. Mine is steel. I question anyone who believes that a manufacturer changed to plastic because it is better and not simply for cost saving.

I have about 150 rds through my p07 since the rod swap and no damage is visible. If you like plastic... Have at it. I prefer metal.

Yea they've beat that horsey in a few threads. Got steel in ALL my CZ's 7 of them and none show any undue wear at all. Nearly 10k rnds through my PCR and the aluminum frame looks like brand new and the steel guide rod went in before I owned the gun for 2 weeks.

the steel guide rod issue is also ONLY prevalent to ALUMINUM ALLOY framed guns, not the full steel ones.

There is a shorter in service round count when it comes to the polymer rods. If they fail to keep shape... At first sign that it's losing its straight demeanor is time to replace it. I don't see anyone with steel guiderods having a replacement ever again after replacing it... Do you replace your plastic rods every few thousand rounds? The round wire spring need replacement every short time also. But if you buy a great quality spring, quench your own spring every couple thousand rds. Stainless rod and good spring= lifelong service life, if its not shot the snot out of. 


The coiled spiral wound springs you speak of are excellent springs. I've got a Geissele super 42 in a few ARs and it runs very well. Lots and lots of rounds.

Here are some pix.. is it ready to break .. probably not.. but I KNOW my stainless one wont. I took big pix and rotated the rod so you can see that not only isnt it straight but there is fair amount of chewing in a  couple of spots. There is also one long gash where the spring seems to have shaved the rod. Have to imagine the spring gliding across shiny slick metal is better than grabbing and shaving plastic. Dont know about any felt benefit but it makes me feel better and for 25 bucks it was better for my health than take out food

My T100 which is aluminum frame comes with steel guide rod from the factory. No frame damage.
