Info wanted: CZ/Colt Z40
« on: August 07, 2007, 06:58:38 AM »
Who can tell me about these pistols? Are they high quality guns, what would one in 95% or better condition be worth?
This is a .40 S&W pistol, manufactured by CZ for Colt as a contract, the contract was cancelled/ended with something like 800 or less guns being made. Or so I am told. Who can tell me more? Any infor sure would be great.

Additional history on the Colt Z-40/CZ 40 B can be found in the "CZ40B Club", a part of this forum.

I recently picked up a CZ 40B on an auction for a rediculously low price, and have yet to find the time to take this jewel to the range to exercise it.

I don't know how many were made befor Colt backed out of the deal, but it can't have been too great a number.  The number you quote, 800 sounds about right, but who really knows, especially between the two 'models'?

We have six Z-40s at the range/shop I worked at, and I didn't snag one because it only had a ten round mag...>:
There was approx 800 units made, of the great conglomeration between Colt and CZ, before Colt got cold feet. We sold them new for right around $600, IIRC. I have seen them used for between $500 and $1500, depending on area. Seriously. Collectors will pay good money for top drawer examples of a reasonable rare sidearm, but at the Mom and Pop Used Gun Shop, it's just another used pistol traded in by the unknowing, and will sit dusty for a year before someone else discovers the greatest DAO trigger ever made.
I do wish someone had ahigher capacity mag for it. I can't say standard capacity, as it was made with a 10 round.

The CZ75B .40S&W mags from Mec-Gar will fit in the CZ40B with no problem, and give you 12 rounds in the process.  Not only that, but about $18/mag (reasonable price in my book).
The lads at CZ were thinking ahead and using the parts bin on that one.

I've answered this elsewhere -- but if you're thinking about buying one for its "collector's" value, you need to get one that's unfired and keep it that way.  Otherwise, collector value with diminish with use.

Thanks for the replies. Walter I didn't know you moderated over here! What a pleasant surprise! I will see the gun tomorrow, it isn't unfired but is ANIB, I was looking for info here then quickly saw they were rather scarce and got more interested. I really like the .40 as a caliber, and I like my 40P most days, especially its accuracy and the feel of the grip...but it isn't as reliable as I'd like it to be. I am slowly trying to work the kinks out of it.

I think you'll find that collector value is a very tentative thing.  I suspect that most Z-40s are now selling for LESS than they were a couple of years ago.  Even if they were selling for the original price, that would be a "loss," since we do have inflation...
