Worldwide Ammunition Shortage

I recently placed an order from Cheaper Than Dirt (actually for a heavy-duty rain poncho which for $20 is excellent by the way). Enclosed with the order was their July 2006 catalog and on page 5 I read the statement that follows...and I quote verbatim;

Dear Valued Customer,

Due to world events, concerns over Iran and Iraq, Avian Flu, and general global instability, ammunition is in short supply. Foreign and domestic suppliers have drastically increased prices and they cannot supply the quantity of ammunition necessary to meet consumer demand. Calibers that are ordinarily widely available have become uncommonly scarce. Currently, we do have .223 in stock, but even these supplies are nearly exausted. We appreciate your patience and understanding in this unstable market.

Respectfully Yours,
The Owners and Managers of Cheaper Than Dirt

Question - Truth or Marketing Ploy? You be the judge.

Oh, I should also add that in addition to their catalog they also enclosed one of the largest paper ammunition flyers I've ever seen with every kind of ammunition they sell.

I believe it is a little of both (truth & marketing). I currently have a case of Fiocchi 230 gr. 45 acp FMJ on backorder at Sportsman guide for a couple of months now. Some ammo is out there.......but in limited supply, and the cost has definitely gone up dramatically. I used to get 1000rds. of factory 9mm regularly for around $100 bucks shipped, .45 acp in the $160 per 1k range. I can still go to gunshows and get reloads around that price, but gunshows aren't frequent in Tucson, AZ. in the summer months. Now if I can find 9mm. for $125.00 per 1k shipped, and .45 for under $200.00 shipped, I feel I did good. It is a good time to be a reloader, but even those supplies are becoming pretty expensive.  I realize there is inflation and costs of materials have risen.........but these prices I state above are only a short time ago. Companies are having to take a beating on shipping cost (because of gas) also. They then pass along the costs to their customers. That said though, alot of the really big outfits have ammo, you just have to be wiling to pay for it.  I have been focusing on ammo as much as I can now, and putting my guns and knives purchases on hold for the time being. I think with Iran and North Korea out there.........ammo might be even harder to come by in the not so distant future.

Take care, MIke Arnold

Hard to tell - lots of ammo dealers have quoted huge overseas orders to Afghanistan, Iraq, Russia, China, etc. Everyone is "gearing up"...I just bought more brass....8)

Yes, it has gotten a little ridiculous out there. I have not reloaded much, except for my match ammo, in a few years because it was cheaper to buy it.  Dusted off the press and I now am doing my practice/plinking ammo as well.  Even though the component prices are up (metal and gas going up), it is still quite a bit cheaper than even getting Wolf now, if you can get it.

Reloading components are also spiking up.  Last month a buddy and I tried to buy 15,000 .452 RNFP bullets for cowboy shooting.

We tried 3 or 4 manufacturers and only LaserCast could fill our order in a timely and affordable fashion.  One of the companies, Magnus Bullets, said that they have a standing order for 500,000 bullets a month from one dealer alone.

Oregon Trail, the makers of LaserCast, use the USPS flat shipping rate and that got us a heck of lot better shipping price than UPS or FedEx.

I've always felt that a gun owner should also be a reloader... just in case.  Just finished another 2k rounds of 7.62x51.  Helps that Pat McDonald is just 2 hours up the road for supplies.

Just got back from Cabelas.  They use to have some of the cheapest JHP's in 40/10mm for reloading.  Not so any more and they even have signs throughout the ammo and reloading area warning you of the price hikes.  Couldn't find a pound of any powder under $20.

I think some of this is just hype. I was at Cabelas about two months ago and tried to find Wolf Gold in .308 for my 550. The guy said that they are sold out and that with the shortage they have the next few shipments already allotted for and sold out; it would be months before more was on the shelves. A month later I went up there again, and they had at least 25 boxes on the shelf (and who knows how many in the back).

When's the last time you tried to buy 7.62x39?  It's been about 6 months since I've seen a regular supply of it.  I'd like to stock up on a couple of cases now.  I'm actually scared to shoot the ammo I have now in case I can't get more!

I've also noticed the price hike.  Even Wally World has raised their prices on the White Box Value Packs from $14.95 to $17.95 on their .40 boxes and $17.95 to $19.95 on their .45ACP.

You are lucky to find .40 for anything close to or less than $9/box anymore.  I used to buy it regularly for $7.50/box -- not even in bulk.  I used to buy 9mm for $100/CASE OTD.  Good luck finding that one anymore either. :(

Ammunition shortage? No I really don't think so. I've seen such posts on nearly every firearms board there is and most are posted by only a couple of individuals. I think the importers are simply chumming the water to freak people out and create a panic buying situation where people will pay absurd prices for marginal ammunition (WOLF). I think I will form a new group - ABW - anything but Wolf! In all seriousness I have been stocking up on brass (Winchester 7.62x39) and will continue to do so, I haven't deceided on what bullet to shoot yet though. I have purchased a few rounds that are reloadable and will just be building a nice stockpile of reloadable stuff for my 7.62x39 - the importers can keep their ridiculously priced junk!

We still have plenty of bullets in stock although preces have gone up we are still about the cheapest around for real jacketed bullets  "not plated junk"
I have to say that JUST bullet prices have risen 30% since this time last year, new brass has gone up 25%.
I am told it will go up again soon maybe another 10% if you watch the metal markets you can see why, what with the gas price etc thank god for US Mail and the flat rate box.

I normally stock Starline brass that sell at about $110 perK.
Tday I needed new 40S&W brass for Nationals, I thought I had some and did not, went to dillon for 500 pieces.............. At my DEALER cost they wer $93 dollars FOR ONLY 500.

No ammo shortage around my house, FedEx dropped off 15,000 speer 9mm 124 FMJ bullets yesterday.
I had to buy in bulk, prices keep going up. In the time since I ordered those bullets at $40/K the price has gone up to $60/K.:eek
