One of the worse days at the range
« on: May 29, 2017, 09:31:02 PM »
Just got the p10c, took the glock 19 and 34 along. Took some poor quality ammo, thats another story and some blazer brass 124 grain. Try not to go indoor except when i don't have time. So, local range reopened after the previous burned down. Lack of a/c, ventilation not so good and sound dampening is poor. So, my luck, i shoot next to someone with a 308, go figure. I wear in the ear and over, it was still really loud and distracting. Then they started using an ammo that had such astringent, burning smell. Affected my lungs and sinuses for two days. I ran 8 miles the morning before the range, the next day i couldn't run 2 miles cause i couldn't breath and the burning was still in my nose. This range has very little restrictions on ammo quality, don't think i should venture there again. This was the third visit, first one with a bad experience.

Easy for me to say,  but I've shot indoors 3 times iny life.  I won't shoot indoors again if there is any alternative available.  I've shot at one local outdoor range where the staff was almost unbearable,  but I would go back there before shooting indoors.
Hope your range options improve. :-\

Its an hour fifteen minute drive to an open range (outdoor), 10 dollar drop in. Go there when i visit my daughter. Another range close by about 30 min away but i need to focus more on my bachelors than spending a day at the range. At least visiting my daughter i can make an excuse to sneak away for an hour and a half. Indoor is 15 min and convenient but a headache to deal with.

Much prefer outdoors. Though the one nice thing is easy brass pickup indoors!

What the heck were they shooting, anti zombie ammo? Gah! I worked an indoor range for over a year, best job I ever had, but the gas and sound is terrible. I much prefer shooting outdoors nowadays. If it still bothers you hit the doc - you might have an actual allergic reaction to some weird left over Zitheranian surplus anti-Zloytl ammo or something.

Some of the mil-spec ammo has a strong ammonia-like smell when fired. I notice that a lot when shooting 5.56 indoors (or when someone next to me is). The same smell was present in the .30-06 ammo fed to the M1 rifles at a Marksmanship Clinic, but it dissipated faster since we were outdoors (good thing since there were 20 or so of us in a line and the rapid fire section was a lot of rounds in a few seconds).

It should be a part of indoor range etiquette to NOT to shoot 556 or 308 when you share lanes with pistol shooters. I took my wife and daughter to an indoor one, they are not into shooting as to endure the Texas outdoor's heat, and they were really turned out because of the amount of noise and shock felt by a shooter that was sighting in his 308 on a 50 yard target.

C'mon guys, leave the comfort of the A/C for the wives and girls :)

Wow.  Who shoots those calibers in doors?   Most of the indoor ranges here don't even allow rifles

Your indoor ranges have A/C?  :o  None of the ones around here do.

All 3 of the indoor ranges I shoot at allow rifles up to .30 caliber. 2 are 25 yards 1 is 23 yards. I understand wanting to get on paper and dialed in. Not much challenge shooting a 223/5.56 at 25 yards. Some even show up with optics....again I understand sighting in...but a lot of these folks are regular shooters that I see every week.
We have a nice Public Range that has 200 yard and 100 yard ranges outdoors. That's more my style shooting an AR style rifle.

One of my dreams is to open a 50 or 100 yard indoor rifle range here in the desert Southwest...for 5 months of the year it would be full every single day.
I ran an indoor range and we never allowed rifles over 22lr. One day some wiseacre came in and was asked if his rifle was 22, and he said yes. He then proceeded to pull out a Mini-14 and drill 8 holes in our backstop, stopped by the failsafe backstop. He was thrown out, and replacement of that plate wasn't cheap.
Up in Phoenix area there are some rifle indoor ranges, but same thing, 25 yards max...what's the point?
