New Shooting Range Infatuation
« on: August 24, 2017, 09:13:43 PM »
Over the past four weeks or so, I had to take a break from focusing on my 25 yd pistol target shooting.  At a gun show I found a local company that cut's AR5000 steel targets at an incredibly reasonable cost.  They also had parts to make very portable, light weight steel target stands.  So, I've been focused on building steel target stands for the range that will easily fit in the trunk of my car.

Here's a pic of the starter set I bought for $80 at the gun show price...two 10" (one is not in the pic), two 8", two 6" gongs, six sets of hangers, and 4 pieces that hold the cross bar and legs together.  I started by building two 2' tall by 3' wide stands using 1" metal electrical conduit.  I've also played around with painting the steel with target patterns instead of just shooting at black steel (do you like my new avatar?).

They have worked wonderfully at 300 yds and 100 yds using my .308 rifle.  I have had to make some modifications to the stand to make it work better with such light weight conduit.

I would highly recommend purchasing steel from this company.  If you are interested in getting a hold of them, please PM me.

Here is one of the steel target stands in the trunk of my car.  It's very easy to put together and carry out to the target line.

At 300 yds...

At 100 yds...

I also just added two 4" and two 3" targets shown in white.  I left the 10" gongs on for added weight for the stand.

I'm getting ready to take two rigs out to the range tomorrow putting one at 100 yds and the other at 300 yds.

They are good guy's with a low cost production line that gives them the ability to sell these at prices much lower than any on-line or local in-store prices.  They are on Amazon and they do ship.  I wanted to test their products before even posting about what I've been doing for the past few weeks.

The newest two 4" and two 3" gongs cost $14 at the gun show price...my LGS has one Caldwell 4" gong for $15.

They are also making me some 2" and 1" gongs.  My thinking is that I could have gongs that are 1 MOA at 100, 200, and 300 yds.  They did laugh at me...I'll prove them wrong... ;D

Do you have a link to the Amazon listing? I wouldn't mind setting up steel at the outdoor range I just joined. It'll be more fun to shoot for cadence than paper targets.

That's a crazy good deal. I was looking at setting up something similar to what you have going on, but the prices everywhere I looked threw a rain cloud on that project really quick. Also, looks really nice!

My range trip from this morning.  Both steel rigs are L to R a 3", a 10", and a 4" gong.

These are my first three shots at 100 yds with a .308.

Here is the 300 yd target.

Got a Phone Skope and thought I'd test it out.  Here's the .308 at 300 yds hitting the red 4" gong.

Now I'm learning the video software...here's the same video in slow motion.
