Choose me or the pistol!
« on: December 30, 2005, 06:31:39 PM »
Yesterday before I went in to work I stopped by and picked up my wife's S&W 64 that we had put on lay-away.  The poor thing had to sit all alone in my car all day, but my wife made it feel better the instant I got home.

I walk in the door and lay the box on the kitchen counter and go to put the dog out for a few minutes.  I turn around from the door and there is my wife loving her new little friend!  This blew me away!!!  I usually never get too far from coming in the house before I get a hug and kiss, but this little stainless beauty took my spot last night.  I had to smile.

We have decided to start shooting together as a family hobbie and I couldn't be happier.  But, I am not sure where to start seeing as neither of us have shot in competitions or in leagues before.  Does anybody have any suggestions for starters?

I understand that some categories only allow certain pistols so here is a list of what we have:

CZ75BD
CZ75B, 9mm
S&W 64, 38 spl
Glock 22
FS Witness, 10mm

My wife likes the smitty and the CZ's.  I'll shoot what's left over (10mm:D )

Thanks in advance for your help.

EZ, I would suggest checking out this site for a club near you: USPSA and the various types of shooting available

Without exception the guys at these clubs are helpful and informative. They are very welcoming to beginners in the sport.

As for guns to shoot, you can use anything you like, but the cheapest way to see if you like it is to shoot production class. This is basically a stock pistol or revolver with either a duty-type rig or specified holsters and mag pouches, and the handicapping allows you to shoot on a level playing field with the more proficient people.

Your Grock 22 or 75b would both qualify for production class.

First off, shop around for a range that offers the NRA Basic Safety and Marksmanship Course and take it with her, whether you need it or not.  Then also see if there is a CCW Course so she can qualify for her CCW permit, should they be available in your State.

After some Family Shooting outings maybe she can decide then, just where she might like to take a Shooting Hobby.  Competition, informal fun plinking, or maybe hunting.  In any case, you're going to need more stuff!  Maybe she'll even take up reloading.

Thanks for all of the info.  We are both getting excited to start shooting together in competition.
Luckily my wife has been shooting rifles, pistols, and shotguns since she was in her teens.  She comes from a big hunting family, hunts herself, and is very much in favor of me teaching our two little girls to shoot and hunt.  In fact tonight we bought our oldest her first cap gun and sat down for some target practive at elk on TV.  She really enjoyed that.

I'll let everyone know how it goes with the organized shooting.
