New P-01 owner here.  Noticing that an occasional right-side pic has the frame markings (NSN) color-filled white.  Mine does not.  is that an after-market cosmetic?  or did some import batches come like that?

My most recent CZ purchase. Now I just need to wait for my holster from High Noon.

My Cajunized CZ Compact with Pachmayr G10 grips.  Was my carry gun until the Sig 365 and then the 365 XL slowly won me over.  Still one of my favorite shooters, even though I don't carry it daily anymore.

Just got my first CZ, a Compact. Something about holding all Steel. You know you’ve got a weapon of mass destruction in the palm of your hand.

Not exactly a 75 Compact, but a hybrid of the Colt Z40 and the CZ P01.  After all CZ had to do something with all those Colt stamped slides after they backed out of the deal...

Maybe you meant "some leftover slides from the CZ-40 and later 40B model runs."?    Some of us called thought the 40P a "frankengun" -- if only because you couldn't get a Kadet Kit to work on it.   (I don't think the 40B-like slide and the P-01 frame looked like they belonged together.)

CZ ought to bring back the 40B in a 9mm version  (9B?) as I suspect they'd sell quite a few of them.

Back in the day, at least one barrel maker (Bar-Sto) offered a 9mm barrel for the 40B, but there weren't a lot of 40Bs (or CZs, for that matter) being sold at that time, which mean there was an even smaller market for conversion barrels.  I traded my 40B away, an action I have long regretted. (It took me a while to get comfortable with .40 S&W guns.  (I now like them...)

A lot of us liked the 40B's 1911-like grip style.  I would love a Colt 40Z (but for it's rumored glass-smooth DAO trigger, not for the Colt name.)  I think there were a few DA/SA Z-40s, too.

I am far from an expert but my understanding is that any of the slides with the cut/grove in the slide had the Colt markings ground off, and the ones with the smooth slides were the later ones made/finished after the deal fell through.  My flat sided 40B is a fair bit higher serial number than my groove cut 40B.

I do agree that it is one of my favorite 40's of all that I have ever had.  It feels very good in the hand and the 40 does not seem to be as snappy in it as in some other compact guns I have shoot, 229 and G23 for example.

I doubt that any of us are experts when talking about the Colt Z-40.  :)

What I find questionable about the explanation you've been given is that the Z-40s I've seen had roll marks in the same areas as the 40B and the 40P.  If CZ had ground the slide down to remove the Z-40 marks and then REMARKED the slide, that area of the slide would have to be somewhat thinner than any I've seen appear to be.

The 40P pictured appears to have it's roll marks in the same areas that the Z-40s were rollmarked, and that area was apparently pretty thick.

This following is the best picture of a Z-40 I could find and rollmarks in that area a made in an area of the slide that is the same height/thickness as the cocking serrations.  That same area of the slide on your 40P seems to be has high as the serrations at the rear of the slide -- which suggests that the rollmark area probably wasn't ground down on the 40P.   The front of the 40P slide seems thinner.
