SP01 Phantom vs. P09
« on: September 22, 2017, 11:40:16 AM »
Mods, my apologies on location if this would go better in another section or even both sections (tough to decide when comparing 2 different models!)

I have been considering a second full size CZ. Have an SP01 already and carry it in all but the hottest weather/lightest clothing. with the re intro of the phantom I have been strongly considering that model. Mag compatibility/familiar shape contours etc. The only thing in the back of my mind is the P series as my brother has an first edition 07 and a CGW SR 09 that are super slick.

1) will their be complete interchangeablity of parts between the phantom and sp01?  ie small parts and repair/wear parts as well as say CGW bushings :)

2) those who have both, long term which is favorite and why?

3) any other considerations y'all can think of...omega vs. standard lock work?

I appreciate the input!

I have both and compete in USPSA. The p09 has a lot of spongy feel in the trigger due to the omega trigger design even with Cajun upgrades. My sp-01 I converted, with Cajun upgrades, to single action only and its one of the best triggers that's not a 1911. Get the phantom. P09 mags are expensive and hard to find at times

The SP-01 and Phantom are basically the same other than the frame.  Same inards, mags etc.  P-09 is a different bird compared to the 75.  I prefer the Phantom because the grips angle is the same as the other 75's.  I did not care for the 09 angle.

There are different aspects of a gun's shootability.  The trigger mechanism is one part. Another is how the gun feels under recoil.  To me, the phantom's recoil is much harsher than the P-09.  That might be something you consider.

The Phantom is the last of the original style CZ setup. The P-09 uses different lock up and other changes. Personally, as a guy with both, I would say the Phantom feels better to me, more like the original ergonomics, and only gives up one round with the stock 18 round magazine. Both of mine were customized by Cajun Gun Works, and both are exquisite, but the one that finds itself in my holster more than any is the Phantom.  8)

I have both and like the feel of the Phantom more (enough so, that if I could have only one it would be the Phantom)

I get a little more "wrap around" with my fingers on the Phantom (with the smaller back strap installed).

With the smallest back strap installed on the P-09, it's easier to reach the trigger than it is on the Phantom, but I don't get as much "wrap around" with my other fingers as I do with the Phantom. To me, this feels like I'm choking the P-09 with a couple of fingers vice getting a good, firm grasp on the Phantom.

I also didn't like the texture of the P-09's back strap (without even doing a comparison to the Phantom), so I ended up stippling it. I'm much happier with it now.
Regards,
Greg

This will sound like many of the others but here goes.....had a modified P-09, it shot very smoothly....less muzzle flip than a similarly modified steel SP-01.  The grip on the P-09 was its undoing for me, the Phantom which I now own has a more traditional CZ feel, not exactly the same but very close.  The thing is if I could have done something to the P-09 grip I probably would have kept it but the issue I have with most composite frames is the side panels of the grips, the "ones size fits all" really doesn't.....interchangeable back straps help but primarily only with reaching the trigger. The Phantom's grip is just better and after its modified just like my P-09 was, it should be a keeper!!!   ;D

Thanks y'all. I actually saw one in store today and got to check it out first hand. I thought it may be a sign but my wife said it wasn't....she's better at discerning those kinda things  I like it more than the 09 feel wise but how does $599 sound? Seems a little high to me but haven't seen one in store in so long might be out of touch...also doesn't help a 75 SA was sitting next to it as well for less. So many firearms so little funds [emoji20]

A local Phoenix dealer is advertising them for $500 this weekend. Sometimes they run higher, but it's all about price competition.

I don't compare shooting the 2 since the Phantom has parts replaced and the P09 is stock; apples and oranges. I have a hogue slip on grip with a palm swell on the Phantom, game changer IMO. The P09 has Talon grip tape. Used the rubber not sand paper style and really like the feel. Any plastic grip gets slippery in the heat and my sweaty hands.

So, finally got to testing out my theory.......I did put about $100 in parts into the Phantom....trigger, ultra lite kit, and other springs, pretty minor stuff really......and I have to say in all honesty it?s better than the fully upgraded P09 was.  Smooth, nice grip, very accurate at 10-12 yds with just factory bushing........I will be upgrading the factory sights to fiber optics, just my preference, the factory aren?t the best for quickly acquiring a sight picture.......so to say I was highly pleased would be a true statement!   :)

I may yet retire my P=09 for a Phantom
