Deformed SS guide rod on Accu Shadow
« on: October 14, 2017, 07:06:57 PM »
Hey y'all : ) I was wondering if this is an issue of concern...
I have an Accu shadow guide rod that is showing some peening on the head (back).  The first owner of the gun put 1500 rounds through it and I do not know hat power factor ammo he used.

Looks like some significant deforming, however the frame and the barrel lug do NOT exhibit any sign of damage.  I guess that is good  I'd rather the SS guide rod take the beating.  You guys think this is an issue?  Is this normal?

I am half tempted to replace the guide rod with a cheap plastic one.  Will it work on the Accu Shadow?

Here's a recent thread started about plastic but ended up discussing the metal guide rods. My particular SP-01 showed damage to the frame as shown in the pictures. This with a 14 lb spring and metal guide rod. Some folks have suggested using a heavier spring.

I've gone with the larger Shadow type plastic guide rod and have seen no deformation or further damage to the frame.

Why would you want to use a metal guide rod and risk damage if you can use a plastic one and go with lighter springs? IMHO this should be a disclaimer when selling the metal rods.

Spring weight has nothing to do with it.  If you look at your barrel about 1/2" in front of the peanut you will see a nick on the barrel, that is where the barrel is hitting the guide rod as the slide and barrel are going back into battery.

Mine had a series of "cuts" on the "front" of the guide rod base.  Increasing the spring weight did stop further damage.
What specifically can cause this ^^^ beside the spring?

When the slide recoils and the barrel cams down it sits deeper in the frame as it goes forward the barrel impacts the guide rod about 1/2"-3/4" in front of the peanut.

To see if the metal guide rod is damaging the frame look at the spot where it sits/contacts the frame. It could be the barrel or it could be that it is pounding the frame because the spring weight is too light for the load.

Thanks for all the feedback, I appreciate y'alls time replying to my woes : ).  These are all logical leads to pursue.  I posted the same question on another forum and apparently this is "normal" from anecdotes from other Accu owners; but still, finding the root cause and mitigating it is not a bad idea.

Maybe this is peculiar to the Accu Shadow..... the one on my SP01 Shadow is pristine after 4k+ rounds.

So that would damage the "Bottom" of the guide rod?  Mine was being damaged

I would think a heavier spring could first of all keep the guide rod in it's correct position (more force), and secondly reduce the velocity on the barrel cam/slide pin during operation. With that said, I've only ever had slight damage and then I filed off and chamfered and it didn't happen any longer. It does make one wonder if that was another consideration when going to the plastic guide rod.
