Disaster at the range with my SP-01
« on: October 25, 2017, 02:13:27 PM »
I went to the range today for the second time with My CZ to test its accuracy against a Glock 34 i just got, the first magazine went fine but at the end of the second mag it locked, i got the magazine out but the slide would not budge, after fiddling with it for a couple of minutes called the range officer over and explained the situation, he went to his bag and brought a slide handling contraption and while using the device held the slide and banged it on the table and it released.

We checked the bullet,White box Winchester 124 Grain, and did not see anything unusual.

It sucks as i really like this CZ and it not functioning as reliably as the 34 is not good.  >:(

What could be the issue?

Probably that cheap bulk ammo . I'm on several gun forums (Glock, CZ, Sig, HK, 1911, Beretta, ) and whenever someone has a problem 95% of the time they're using the bulk WWB ammo .

I understand but FTF/FTL/stove pipe yes but slide locking and not budging is new to me.

Check the barrel in case you had a squib and put a little bulge in it.

If the oal on that round was too long, the bullet could have been stuck in the rifling and locked the slide up.

WWB is junk. Way, way too many reports of issues with it. I avoid it all together. I'll shoot steel cased ammo before WWB.

I took it apart and with the limited knowledge i have did not see anything unusual, i put a couple of different bullets in the barrel throat and went in normal no sticking out,  just to be clear the slide was locked closed not open.

I have seen it happen many times while working matches and had it happen to me several times.

A slightly different bullet shape or a slightly messed up factory round will lock it up tight as a drum. I have had to put it against a sturdy wood bench and smack the grip hard with my hand to get the slide to unlock.

It does not have to fit very tight in the removed barrel to make this happen. If it won't pass the plunk test it can lock it up.
It happens on all gun brands too but some like CZ  tend to have tighter or shorter chambers.

My buddy reloaded 100 rounds that were just slightly too long to pass the plunk test.  He managed to shoot about a third of them after having it lock up 2 or 3 times.  He took them home and shortened them up and never had another problem.  I don't remember which firearms he had at the range that day.... He shoots pretty much all different brands, but that was before he bought his current batch of CZs.

Yup like others have said. That round was a little too long and got stuck in the rifling. As a reloader I have had this happen a bunch and it?s always at the worst times!

The ONLY thing you need to do is use just about any other kind of ammo and I?m betting it?ll run just fine. Just grab a box of 2 or 3 different brands and weights and run them through, I haven?t found any ammo yet that any of my CZ?s won?t run perfectly with, but WWB is really bad ammo for a LOT of guns.

I?ve been through a large number of different 9mm ammo brands... Too many to list. By buying a wide variety, I?ve found what runs best in MY pistols. WWB was one of those that I tried and stopped using.

MY top picks for reliability at a good cost point are (a) Perfecta and (b) Federal brass. Perfecta was readily available at WM but I think they got squeezed and are no longer being stocked. Been replaced by Federal brass in 100rd boxes at under $20.

YMMV
Used to own a CZ Jawa...

I just bought a 100 round box of Federal 115 grain FMJ ammo from Walmart for $18 and change.  My P09 makes small holes with this ammo.

Well, a group with this small ammo results in a small hole, put it that way.

Side story.  I had to open my big mouth when I was talking to the clerk.  I said, "My CZ pistol really shoots this ammo very well.  It's just for putting holes in paper, anyway.""  His reply??  "Hey, it'll work for self defense just fine.  Don't stop shooting till the magazine is empty."

I didn't tell him the pistol will hold 22 rounds of this ammo (with the CZ +2's on the bottom of the magazine).
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?
