Gun food
« on: November 02, 2017, 12:55:44 PM »
I just typed out a 3 page essay about ammo selection before I realized how much of a spaz I was being so heres the straight and to the point:

SP-01 9mm, my local fun stores only carry 115gr (which my sp01 basically throws up if I feed it), 125gr wwb, or 9mm thats going for $1.50/round.  Which, when it comes down to it I'd rather have 2000 rounds of wwb garbage than 300 rounds for the same price.  What ammo do you guys go with for familiarization/fun/budget training and training/carry?  Also, is there any 115gr out there that performs well in the sp-01 or is it just too light to have the correct pressure?

Best to start reloading.  Then you have no need for WWB or $1.50 a round ammo.  Reloading 124 or 147gr gives me any practice round for .12 to .16 cents a round.  Yes, ammo is cheap for 115gr, and that is where I get my "new" brass to reload once a year.  BUT, you will not save money reloading!!!  You'll get to shoot much more often affordably.

I haven't noticed any difference in accuracy across varying bullet weights.  Some have noted that the P-09 favors lighter bullets, but there isn't such a consensus with the SP-01 or Shadows.  If you're wanting to find some heavier ammo at a good price, Federal American Eagle has a rebate running til the end of the year.

Pretty much a CZ fanboy.

thanks for the input.  Im planning on getting into reloading but for the time being I have about 5 unfinished projects around the house before I could set up a reloading area in the garage without my wife having a kitten.

Visit targetsportsusa and sgammo and get yourself a case or two of Sellier & Bellot 124gr or 115gr FMJ ammo. Reliable, accurate, clean and inexpensive.

Great for practice and training.

For carrying get some JHP like Speer GoldDot or similar and test them in your gun. You don't need too many of them, so higher price will not matter that much.

If you have the stock recoil spring,  getting a $7  11# recoil spring should let you feed, fire and extract the available 115 gr ammo.  Federal,  Blazer brass and even Winchester 115 should do fine for range plinking and gun familiarization.  The Win ammo seems to have lost some reliability lately,  but I've fired many thousands reliably before I started reloading with 124 gr as my preferred bullet weight.
ALL of these and more should function well in your pistol after it's broken in.

For SD practice,  some stronger ammo would be best.  The S&D mentioned above is good and real SD ammo occasionally is a good idea.

Better get that reloader now,  I "retired" last December and my to do list continues to grow.  I guess that means I am enjoying my days doing a little less that expected.
