New 455 Varmit Evolution..... scope?
« on: November 26, 2017, 02:56:27 PM »
Basically been a grail gun but never put hands on one until it was in a local shop. It's exactly what I thought it would be and feels amazing. So I have it now, but still no clue on what rings and scope to go with. I've gathered from older posts to use the DIP rail, but which height rings and scope would y'all suggest?

Gun will be used for target shooting and occasional pesky squirrel. 22 LR by the way

I'm using a Leupold VX 1 2-7 x33 with BKL 1 inch rings, medium, 11mm dovetail...bolt handle clearance is fine.

We've had good luck with the Nikon Prostaff Target EFR.  It's a 3-9x40 with an adjustable objective (down to 10 yards).

I've had some 40mm optics on 22's.....to me, the scale of that size scope borders on too big, asthetically speaking, functionally either is a great addition......the 33mm just "fits" the scale of a 22 rifle a bit better.... IMHO  ::)

I'm having a hard time deciding what size to go with. I want to target shoot out to 100 yards and for squirrel, rabbits under 100 yards. I want the ability to hit out that far accurately, but don't want a giant scope either.

Those 3-9's enough for shooting out to 100?

One other element to consider, which you may have already, is the trajectory of .22LR ...if you zero at 100yds you'll be 2.75" high at 50yds and 2.4" at 75yds (using 40gr loads) - you might consider a 75yd zero.

With a 75yd zero, the amount of error is less than a 100yd zero (the bullet doesn't drop 1.5 inches below the line of sight until it reaches something like 85-90 yards). As a general rule, beyond the 90 yard mark the bullet's trajectory drops so steeply that it would be difficult to maintain accuracy (may not be exact for your rifle and ammunition at your altitude).

Got the scope base in from Dip products. Fit and finish is great, just need to figure out scope now.

Interested to know what you decided to go with, settings (for zero) and results.

Scope wise I've settled on the Mueller APT 4.5x14

I'll probably set 0 at 50 yards. But haven't decided 100% yet

I think you'll like that Mueller.  I've got a small herd of them and haven't had the least problem with any of them.  I put the APT on my .17HMR 455 Trainer.
If at first you don't succeed, get a bigger hammer.

I had one before on a Savage. It was pretty good for the price.

+1 for the Nikon PROSTAFF 3-9 Target EFR. Great scope that allows parallax adjustment, plus it's very clear and bright. I also prefer to zero at 75 yards thus giving me lethal impact's on critters at 50 and 100 yards. You're gonna love the CZ accuracy.

Ended up with a Vortex Crossfire II 4-12x40 with adjustable objective. Went to cabelas and looked through the Nikon Target EFR, and a couple other models. The glass across the board was good but I liked the 4-12 option and reticle of the Vortex.
