FINISH Options for the Alloy Frames
« on: November 24, 2017, 08:34:02 PM »
Hey, everyone. Was wondering if someone could tell me what my aftermarket finish options might be for the P01/PCR. I know any of the spray/bake-on finishes, like Cerakote or Gun Kote, are always a possibility. But what about hard chrome or bluing the frame?

You are limited to what you can do as it is an aluminium frame. Chrome, ti nitride,  blueing will not work. Certain companies have proprietary coatings that are applicable to aluminum such as Robar and CCR. I had Brazen firearms cerokote my frame and ti nitride my slide and barrel it came out amazing. Cerokote so far has held up great and looks really good. I have posted pics of it in different threads. Check it out

I've heard you can nickel plate and then hard chrome.

You can also have the frame anodized.

Have a Canik alloy frame that is hard chromed from factory.
When did it change from "We the people" to "screw the people"?

Why use 911 when it's faster to use 1911 or 9mm?

Check out Robar, they have some special coatings that would work.

There's a guy over on Walther forum that had his PPQ done by them. It looked great.

Are you positive it is actually chrome? I seem to recall it was supposedly something else.

That's what the manual description calls it.

I think I?m leaning toward Gun Kote. The Navy still uses that stuff.

You might want to go a SIG forum and do some reading.  Anodizing puts a layer of substrate into the metal. Tolerances are key.  You cannot simply blast away then Gunkote like you do to steel.  You will change tolerances, etc.  Alloy frames need to be refinished by a professional t maintain the tolerances.  Aluminum is NOT steel, and doesn't refinish like steel.

It has to be nickel plated first and then hard chromed.  Here's the before and after of an aluminum framed HiPower that I had hard chromed.
