P07/09 with Cajun Springs and Hard Primers
« on: December 09, 2017, 10:23:42 AM »
Interesting video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eJq_fZtKQI

Interestingly enough I had a couple of light strikes with Wolf with my Stock 07.  This has seemingly gone away with more shooting.  I use a fair amount of Tula and Wolf because it is cheap (about 16 cents a round shipped) and if a gun will shoot these hard primers, it will be totally reliable.  As a data point, my stock P99s never miss a beat with Wolf/Tula.   (Up until lately I have purchased silver bulleted Tula at W and it is also a good bit cleaner).

[If you hate steel cased ammo I ask for your charity (refrain from comments) - the thread is about total reliability.  I already know some consider all steel cased ammo as junk and not worthy for your guns - been there].

BL:  What is YOUR experience with an EXTENDED CGW FP and various CGW hammer springs and the ability to light ALL primers, especially hard ones like Wolf and Tula.?  What is the LOWEST spring you have used with 100% reliability.  (I also know guns can vary - one could be totally reliable with the 15 LBer and another may need the 18 LBer).

Thanks!

My results may not help you since all I shoot are my own reloads.  I have two P-09's, one in .40 the other in 9mm, the .40 cal I run an 11lb hammer spring, in the 9mm I run a 13lb hammer spring.  Both guns have the extended CGW FP, both guns are 100% reliable with S&B primers, Win, CCI, and Federal.  I do seat my primers very deep and give them a slight crush which I'm sure helps.

Yes, Tula, Wolf, and S&B need to be seated deeper than American primers. They have a slightly shallower dimension.

I gave up on Wolf long ago too many no Fires.
All I shoot for practices Freedom Munitions never had a problem. I think maybe I had four misfires in a thousand rounds

My P07 has stock springs in it.

A few years back when I was fighting with one of my M&Ps and failures to fire I loaded up some ammo with Tula small rifle primers to shoot in both guns.  The P07 ate those hard small rifle primers with ease.

I have never shot factory steel cased ammo in the CZ's.  In fact, not one of my CZ .40's has ever fired a single factory round of ammo.

An extended firing pin should help if you decide to go to a lower lb. hammer spring.

How many rounds do you feel you need to fire in order to decide whether or not your pistol is reliable?

Is this steel cased ammo or range use, personal protection.  If for range use, do you feel you need 100% reliability to put holes in paper?  Or is a failure to fire, now and then, "good training" for clearing the pistol and getting it back to ready to fire?  I've heard guys say they use their Korean made Glock magazines for that.  Range mags and the occasional malfunction gives them a training aid.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Yes, putting a slight crush on them gets the anvil closer to the firing compound in the primer and makes it easier to set off.  A trick pioneered by old school revolver shooters that were shooting ultra light springs in their DA revolvers.

Haven?t had issues with 15lb main spring in 4 personal P series guns across god only knows how many thousands of rounds. But I don?t shoot crappy steel cased ammo either.

I had to look up the silver bullet description. So what you can buy at your wallymart is a zinc coated bullet, said to be harder and slicker than copper coats. An interesting thing to know.

No reason to use any steel case for defense, and it isn't loaded for that.  At about 20% cheaper, accurate enough for ringing steel and reliable (feeding), its worth it for not reloading.  I just wondered how theses guns did with an extended firing pin AND 15 and 18 LB springs for UTTER reliability.

Smacking down hard primers with a 13 LB spring sounds good, of course CGW recommends 18 for defense use.  Anyone CARRYING with the 15 and find confidence doing so?

DOC: you were running an extended FP with those light strikes and the 15 LB spring?

Thanks.

All of my guns have the 15# HS and I have no issues at all with light strikes across a wide spectrum of factory brass-cased ammo. I'm using the CGW extended FP, etc...

cgw fp spring, factory fp, 15# hammer spring. I have total confidence with Federal HST 147 will go off every time with this setup.
No problems with any other ammo, except for tula and wolf ammo it's cheap ammo for a reason.

I load my own and some primers out there are pretty hard. My P-07 has a stock firing pin with a CGW spring kit including the 18lb CGW hammer spring. I've had no failures to fire in nearly 10k rnds. My other CZ's have the 15lb hammer spring with stock length firing pins with no failures as well. Can't attest to steel cased ammo though as I haven't tried any in years. Even if I did have a failure with a hard primer and practice ammo I would likely not be overly concerned as long as the gun is 100% with my defensive ammo of choice.

I'd like to try some, but Federal Aluminum at my Walmart is so cheap, less than $9.00 a boss. Brass is even on sale at my local Walmart for less than $9.00 a lot. I have the #15 spring, but not the extended firing pin. Only ever had one round not go off, but it wasn't a light strike, just a bad round.
