Cerakoting Slide
« on: December 21, 2017, 01:07:25 PM »
I saw pics of a Burnt Bronze slide on a P07 and liked it enough to think about one myself.  I would not want to have the Melonite blasted off first, and wanted to know if someone here just had the slide cerakoted after only degreasing the P07 slide? Did it wear well?  (I know per Cerakote instructional you should blast, blah blah).  Just wonder. Thanks.

Cerakote instructions are not "blah blah blah", I promise. Cerakote WILL NOT hold up unless it's sprayed directly onto base material. Trying to do otherwise is the kind of stuff that gives a great finish a bad name when people complain it's not lasting.

Why would you want to keep the OEM coating? It's not nearly as corrosion resistant as cerakote is. Like not even in the same playing field. It is of zero advantage to keep it on there.

Background: we spray thousands of slides and AR receivers, barrels, etc a year.

I do both, duracoat and cearkote. If you don't blast, it seems to chip and flake a lot easier.

What's the difference in the two?

More than just your interest for the po7. I'd like to know about it and how it relates to the P10. There has been a lot of grief given on Youfloob about Cerakoting on a P10 and that being the cause of Malfuntion City.  Any Clues?

I think I found a correct answer on another site.  If the Slide is properly blasted (Al Oxide), the nitride remains intact (because it is a treatment that penetrates the surface), and you can cerakote OVER the nitriding.  This is likely the best of both worlds.  Of course you have ti find a refinisher that knows what they are doing.

SO... back to the OP:  Anyone with experience here Cerakoting OVER nitride?  I do know that the CZ nitriding on its P series is reportedly VERY durable.

I've seen the Cerakote vids, and it IS likely the best coating, if it is scratched through i would expect that it will corrode deeper and MUCH faster than nitriding that is a surface treatment that hardens and penetrates.

Both are good. They wear about the same. Duracoat is easier to apply and touch up. I like cerakote better on pistols.

Primary Machine cerakoted the slides on my P07 and P09 (also milled the slides for the RMRs, installed the RMRs, milled for the rear back up sight and installed the front/rear sights) over 18 months ago.

My P07 goes in/out of a kydex holster (not finish friendly compared to a soft nylon/leather lined holster) almost daily.  I think it was about 2 months ago that I finally noticed the first sign of wear on the front corner (on one side) of the slide.

I try to keep the metal parts wiped down with an oily cloth after cleaning/lubing (yup, I wipe and oily rag over the cerakote every time as I make sure I get oil on the sights, the pins, etc.) and so far I've seen no rust.  In the summer time I sweat enough that after 2 or 3 hours in a holster the pistol comes out looking like I left it out in the rain with all the moisture beaded up on the surface.  I don't have a show gun, they are "working" guns and are on my hip even when I'm up under the car/truck changing oil/oil filter or working on the brakes, rolling around in the grass while playing wit the dogs, etc.

Good luck, with whatever finish you choose.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

We?ve cerakoted dozens of P-10?s and never heard any complaints of it causing malfunctions.
