Scorpion Carbine 9BPLE +P+ Reliability Test
« on: January 07, 2018, 05:24:51 PM »
I've had extremely good reliability shooting my 2017 Scorpion Carbine in four USPSA PCC and two Outlaw 3-Gun matches. Not a single problem. I even ran five Federal 9BPLE +P+ rounds through it a few months ago just to see if it would feed them.

My hit ratio has been good too, so much so I wanted to see if the Scorpion would be good in a self defense situation with 9BPLE +P+ rounds. The only modifications I've made to my Scorpion that would effect functioning are

HBI Spring Kit
HBI poly charging handle
Manticore 32 round clear magazine
Taylor Freelance 10 round extension
Taylor Freelance Wolff spring for GLOCK 41+1 kit

I fired 40 rounds of 9BPLE +P+ in this configuration at our outdoor range today.

5 rounds properly shouldered
5 rounds very lightly shouldered
5 rounds away from the shoulder
5 rounds away from the shoulder and turned 90 degrees right
5 rounds away from the shoulder and turned 90 degrees left
5 rounds away from the shoulder and turned 180 degrees up side down
10 rounds rapid fire

There were ZERO issues. I think this firearm would do well as a self defense weapon.

I should add the receiver mold seems to be the latest version that I've seen posted on this forum.

I haven't done any parts or feed ramp polishing or modifications to assist in feeding hollow points.

Thanks for posting this.  I wanted to feed mine some standard XTP hollow points but reliability was 50% with some of the rounds got bullets pushed in.  Looks like the Federal 9BPLE has a slight crimped case and a rounder profile.  I will have to get some to give it a whirl.

I purchased my Federal 9BPLE ammo from sgammo.com

Their email / text notifications really work for out of stock products, but that's not an issue right now for this round

I?ve run quite a bit through mine, 115/124/147 ball, Tula steel, blazer and federal aluminum case, 124/147 hst and +p variant of each, 147 subsonic, extreme hollow points.  I haven?t tried gold dot, critical duty, or extreme penetrator but I?d like to and make sure they?ll cycle.

The first thing I did when I bought the scorpion was break it in with 200 rounds of 147 HST since that?s my carry/defense go to and if it doesn?t run that there?s no place for it at my house.  Luckily it?s ran any and everything I?ve fed it.  Only 1 hiccup and it was a short stroke, ammo related as the same ammo from the same box caused it in my P01.  It was 1 single box of federal HST, a couple of the rounds weren?t loaded with the right charge and it was enough to move the action but not enough to eject and pick up a round.  Rack the slide/bolt and kept trucking, weirdest thing ever but haven?t had a box of HST do it since so calling it a fluke

Just a side note. I've read that 9BPLE gets close to 1,600 fps / 654 ft pounds from a 16" carbine barrel.

The recoil is SO manageable from my Scorpion Carbine.

If anyone has actual ballistic info of 9BPLE in a Scorpion, please post it. Thanks.

My experience is that 147 grain ammo will gain 75-100 fps from the scorpion over what the box says.  The lighter bullet the more you gain.  115 was gaining about 150 fps over the box, I?d wager a 124 grain will gain 100-125 fps but these were standard pressure loadings too.  The 9BPLE +p+ is rated as 1300.  I?m betting you could reasonably get 1400-1450 fps easy but 1600 fps even from a 16? I think is pushing it.

It often fragments from 4" pistol barrel so can't imagine it doesn't do the same from the longer barrel.
