1921 Colt 1903 pocket restore project
« on: February 09, 2018, 10:04:20 PM »

Inherited this one from my dad . It has a bulged barrel from a squib  load at some point in life , which was not uncommon for a pistol from this era.

So I figured the gun did not have a great deal of collector value so I carefully removed the old finish with all hand work to save the roll marks and then rust blued with 7 cycles of rust /boil/card .

Oh , it still shoots very well , this was at 10 yards  ;)

Dang that is beautiful! One day when I have a garage or shop I’ll do one of these. Just a cool piece of history! Most excellent work, thanks for sharing!

These do have collector value.  Ones in this shape can bring close to $1,000 if it was the original finish.  Not sure how the re-blue will affect its value. Most collectors also are looking for the case coloring on the grip safety.  Great looking example of a fine Colt.  Go to Gunbroker to see what they are selling for.  I assume you found a new barrel for it, as they are available.

This is one of my favorite guns.  If you want to see them used in the movies check out the old Humphrey Bogart flics.  It is prominent in "Key Largo" though out the movie (both in blue and in nickel finishes), and it is what Bogart uses at the end of "Casa Blanca" to kill the German officer as the plane is escaping.  Enjoy

That is beautiful! Rust blue is fun once you get the hang of it. SP01Shadow would be proud.

Wow! 'Shiver me Kimbers' that is one handsome pistol; and a fine shooter too.
John Moses Browning would be proud.  Thanks for sharing.

I don't think selling this one is an option at any point , just buried my dad a couple of weeks ago .

He actually bought it from my wife's uncle who we still care for (97 year old WW2 vet) . And of course it was purchased for nothing back then since the barrel was ringed . So this has some sentimental value for me.

I think maybe a set of walnut grips and a new barrel may be something to look into some day . As you can see the original Bakelite grips are broken .

Sorry about your dad. May he be by your side until the day you two are reunited.

What you’ve done only adds deeper family value and this will always be a treasured heirloom!
