S&W 627 converted to 9mm
« on: February 15, 2018, 09:42:36 PM »
So my 627 should be on it?s way home next week from the smith who is fitting a new cylinder that can shoot 9mm & 38 super. The original cylinder remains chambered for 357, so I can retain its original configuration.

For those who wonder why, I shoot Uspsa and enjoy shooting revolvers. Don?t want to buy a 929 & the conversion was less expensive anyway.

When it arrives, I?ll report on it & take some pics

Interesting conversion, never though about 38 super in revolver.  I have a 27-2, 3-1/2 that is my absolute favorite revolver.  Yours is going to be a lot of fun!

So a quick update.  I received my 627 with a 9mm cylinder fitted ( actually can accommodate 9mm, 38 super, 356 tsw, 9x23) about 45 days ago. Just didn?t have the time to get to the range.

Took it to the range yesterday, accuracy was a non issue. It shot POA, which surprised me. I tried 147 Federals, 124 Speers, and 115 Tula crap. The 147 Federal shot best, but all were fine.

Did experience some light primer strikes. At home found the mainspring screw backed out ~2 turns. After tightening it, and shooting it again this morning, it ran like a top.

Am really looking forward to shooting some matches with it.

So to recap, my 627 Pro now has 2 cylinders- the original for 357/ 38s and a the new cylinder chambered for 9mm ( and the others listed above). Am really happy with this set up.

Wow! Pretty cool set-up. Thanks for sharing your conversion info and experience.
I have a 627-5 Performance Center 8-shot 357 Magnum.
Very versatile handgun. But, I could imagine even more versatile with a 9mm cylinder. Hmmm.

Wow.  Really a great conversion.  I always wanted a 929 to play with,  but it wasn't practical for me.
Moon clips coming with it?  How many rounds for the 9mm?

Wow, with that big frame it will probably feel like you're shooting a .22 instead of 9mm.  That gun should last forever.

It?s an 8 shot, just like the 929 & 627. Bought the 9mm moonclips from Revolver Supply Co ( great guys & the moonclips work for 38 super too)

Was surprised that with the JM grip I installed, I felt discomfort on the inner joint of my strong hand. Changed the grip back to the original Houge mono-grip & no issues. Recoil was negligible.

Pics as requested. Apologies for delay

Pics show the 9mm cylinder installed with the original 357 cylinder on the side. Moon clipped 38s & 9mm also shown.

Very Cool indeed.

The money saved on bulk 9mm ammo could pay for the extra cylinder.  ::)
Thanks for posting.
