Last week there was a situation outside of Philadelphia where a drug enduced man in a hospital E.R. grabbed the service weapon of a police officer and fatally shot him. He then shot another officer, wounding him. He fled, but was eventually caught.

A few days later, the city's leading news radio station said that a local firm was working on a new "smart gun". Instead of worrying about computer chips and the such, each police officer (it is not intended for civilian use) will have to wear a special glove while on duty. The glove will have a raised area in the palm that will go into the grip of the service gun and act like some sort of key. The report said that the local F.O.P. is against it, but the company is still looking for a gun manufacturer to partner up with.

Any thoughts?

Too many things can go wrong, the risk of failure is too high, plus I don't want to limit a handgun to a single operator. A tactical situation or a home invasion may require that a fellow LEO or a spouse use your handgun if you are incapacitated. I don't know if these "smart" grips or chips can be programed for multiple users.
In my opinion, the smartest handgun is one that is connected to a good human brain with respect to safety, tactical training and common sense. I have to agree with the FOP on this, I think this is simply an avenue to make more money and has no real tactical application IMHO.

The so called "Smart Guns" as typically designed are a DUMB idea! Also, if the Batteries are dead the Pistol won't function because it won't recognize it's owner!

That glove Idea is so stupid. You would have to grip it perfect for it to work and I can see some cop trying to draw his pistol fast and have it not work. I do not want one and would not force a cop to have one either. It is not a perfect world and there are no perfect situations. I would look into a holster before I would look at a STUPID (smart) gun. How about a smart bullet that will only penetrate bad guys!? LOL . I am not going tp blame the officer either I am going to blame the drug user and the drugs.

WHAT A NOVEL IDEA! Lets place the responsibility on the CRIMINAL and work from that direction.

PS: I am just thinking of what the media is saying I am not mocking you CZJedi I know technology also can be looked at to help in situations like this. I am just venting. LOL

The idea is that there would be not chips or batteries, just a raised area that inserted in the grip. If all officers had them, then any cop could use it. The problem I see with it, is that human nature being what it is, officers with this device might think that they are safe and thus be a bit more careless with securing the firearm. Combine that with the time it would take for one person to steal a glove (or one cop to misplace it) and the black market will be flooded with these gloves in a matter of weeks.

An idea was proposed some time ago....make "smart" guns that use batteries to function. Put no more restrictions on firearms except all "dumb" guns must be retrofitted...
Then restrict the batteries heavily. No violation of 2A - gun and ammo can be purchased freely, just no special batteries to run them.....
I'll keep my "dumb" CZ PO1...

Didn't NJ pass a law that within 5 years of a fully marketed smart gun, only smart guns would be able to be sold in the state? This is the dangerous part.... if one small company wants to make quick cash, they partner up with an idea like this, sign and exclusive contract (assuming they paten the idea) and within five years you have the entire state to yourself. You know, NJ is shapped like an arm pit for a reason.

Wow, I didn't hear about it, but NJ is even more bolshevised than Kalifornia. I didn't hear about this NJ story, can you link to a source. I would be very interested in researching this further. I am pretty up to date on RKBA issues.

I live right across the river from NJ, so I hear all their local news. I think this story was about three years old (isn't that when Colt was working on a smart gun?), and the saving grace has been that nobody has delivered on the concept yet.

And just wait until they elect their new govenor. The Dem who is running (and will probably win) is a real left-wing nut job. I've thought for a while that, politically speaking, NY had passed CA as far as worst state (Clinton & Schumer = the anti-christ and his bride), but NJ might even pass them soon.

EDIT: here is a link... it is actually three years after it is produced, not five. And note that it is "after production", no mention of function or reliability. I guess we can all thank God that Jenings has gone out of business! :rollin

Oh, I forgot to mention the other part of the NJ law... a $1,000 per bullet fine for having (not using, just having) hollow point ammo. So if you buy one box, that is $50,000!!!

If you transported my closet to NJ, I would be given a $375,000 fine for the HPs and JHPs that I have boxes of.
