Impact of Grip Palm Swell on Trigger Finger Postion
« on: February 17, 2018, 03:31:07 PM »
I recently returned to shooting pistols after many years away.  I picked up a Shadow 2 in late December.  So far the gun is factory stock.  I have large hands and typically buy XXL gloves.  Fingers are long and not at all fat.  When I grip the gun, my trigger finger naturally comes into contact with the trigger slightly past my first finger joint.  From my reading it seems that the optimal trigger finger position would be to have the first pad of my trigger finger contacting the trigger but not past the first joint. I am also getting a bit of trigger sting although not a big concern.

Would a grip that has a larger palm swell such as the Palm Swell Bogies have any impact on where my trigger finger contacts the trigger??

I also have looked at some of the Cool Hand Grips which I prefer the look of but they do not appear to have as much palm swell.  I could not find a website from the Cool Hand manufacturer that might have more detailed information.

Try LOK palm swell grips.
Palm Swell Bogies are LOK grips.

Thanks George and Earl for the suggestions!  I have certainly read a lot of very positive reviews on the LOK Palm Swell Bogies.

Everyone...has a slightly different trigger pull that works best for them in their pistol.  Be sure to test yours thoroughly before you jump into a guess.  JoeL has discussed this at length for his Bullseye shooting.  Different venues may mean different  finger placement.
The LOK Bogie palm swells will shorten your reach.  They also sell thin bogies that I use.

Great grips.

If you have XXL hands, I imagine that your own grip will determine trigger finger position rather than the grip itself. If you don't like the Bogies pattern, you can ask Jayson to cut you palm swells in their other patterns (or custom G10)

I wear 2xl gloves as well. I haven't added an S2 yet, but I do like the palm swell bogies on my 75's. No movement at all, but they don't feel aggressive when shooting. I'm hoping Jayson will make palm swell bogies for the 97 some day. By far the best grips I've tried so far.

one day after a few mikes on the follow up shots I filed down that top hump on the right panel of the palm swells .. seemed to help .. point is, the G10 material is adjustable.

I found this part to be the key.  When I ordered a set from LOK grips, I asked them to sand that part down to begin with, as it definitely 'gets in the way' of the trigger finger, like on the stock rubber palm swells.

Also, different palm swells from different makers vary in their shape and size.  I had a set of Cool Hand swells, and they were very large in the middle but then curved way in.  Just too much contouring for me.

The LOK's are about the same as the stock rubber, with less peak/valley than the Cool Hand's.  A nice full grip. but again has those peaks up at the top.

Next, the VZ Grips palm swell is pretty slim....basically like a set of their normal thin panel (but not as thin as aluminum), but with some slight swelling in the palm. The top part has no extra peak.  Very nice if you like your grips slim.

I appreciate all the great input!  I am thinking that for the moment I am going to try to pay close attention to how this all feels the next time I go to the range to see if I  can learn anything new.

In reviewing comments from SlvrDragon50 I am not that confident that the Palm Swell grips will have much impact on my trigger finger placement.

Sounds like Jayson is very helpful at LOK.  I think I will ultimately contact him for input before I make a final decision.

Here is a video I made to show what I have done to mine.  Lots of folks think this is a little extreme.  And it is, unless trigger finger placement has to be perfect.  A factory pistol is just a starting point.  I can change the gun.  I can't change my fingers.

You have spider-hands!  That can be a bit of pain sometimes fitting a handgun.

Nutrider, do you know anybody with a set of OEM rubber palm swell grips? You could try those and see if they help. Depending on your location, maybe somebody here could help out.

You can also ask Jayson to make you a set of ?fat? grips that are 1/16? thicker than his normal palm swell bogies.
