Suppresor-ready P-07 - leaving thread protector off
« on: February 19, 2018, 03:45:03 PM »
Guessing this will rank up there in the not so great questions. But on my P-07, can I just leave the thread protector off. Invariably during shooting events it starts coming loose. Guessing some blue loctite might take care of the issue as well. Mine did not come with, or I did not find it, a wrench for tightening the protector and none of my choke wrenches work, so have been jury-rigging solutions.

Two things.

Yes, you could leave it off but then it won?t protect your threads.

Second, adding a small o-ring at the base of the barrel threads will keep the protector snugged up during recoil.

I always left mine off while shooting and then put it back after shooting.

An "O" ring is your friend. I've shot thousands of rounds through several pistols and have never had a loose thread protector when using an "O" ring. Super cheap and very easy to put on and take off.

+1 on 'O' Rings  Much better than any Locktite.
I got a Dorman 'value pack'# 799-451 of 144 Standard 'O' rings at the auto parts store. I think like $7.99. Same pak is also sold under different brand names like AutoCraft.

8 different sizes.  Some I use for dry-fire hammer stops, some I use to lock Thread Protector on 9mm and larger ones for 45ACP threaded barrels.

Mucho gracias on the o-rings. Probably have a few laying around from working on Harley's and old Ford pickups.

Good advice both ways in the comments above.  I tend to remove the thread protector while shooting and reattach afterwards.   I don't like the distraction of re-tightening a protector and doing so during an action pistol match brings the inherent risk of sweeping myself to earn a DQ.   Also, removing it minimizes the risk of losing it during a match.  I've found other people's wayward thread protectors on match day.

Barrel steel is pretty tough stuff, by necessity, and nothing I subject my guns to is going to harm the threads.  That said, accidents happen and a dropped pistol would, by Murphy's Law, land squarely on the threads.  I might try the o-ring come to think of it  :)

Barrel steel is actually not nearly as hard as you might think. It's the coating that gives it the hardness. At any rate, it takes much much less effort than you might think to ding a thread(s).  But it's definitely aggravating. That's why we designed our thread protector with an internal relief cut for an O ring to keep it tight, which is included with it.

Is the P-07 a reasonable competition firearm? I am wanting to check out IDPA or similar to get some more fun out of my firearms, other than cutting holes in paper.

Sure, depending on your expectations... Competing with a stock carry pistol is a great way to push yourself and shake out your gear.

I am on the other end of that spectrum. My carry pistol is far from stock so I end up "competing" with guys who are using tuned competition guns. I don't sweat that, though. I am just there to push myself and shake out my gear... and, of course, have fun!

I put a little Teflon tape on mine on my Tactical.  It seems to work pretty well.

Also, a little dab of thick grease on the threads will work. I use the old Lubriplate. Also use it on arrows before screwing on tips.
