Grip Angles: Shadow 2 compared to Phantom or P-09
« on: February 26, 2018, 03:32:32 PM »
I just picked up a P-09 to specifically use it as a lightweight option for Run N Gun matches. Running 5 miles with a full steel Shadow 2 on my hip had me in serious discomfort.

Now that it's arrived and I've put 250 rounds through it and some dry fire, I'm finding that the grip angle is just *slightly* different than my S2. They are both perfectly natural point of aim for me, but reloads are killing me - I jam up on the P-09 frequently. And after enough dry fire with the P-09 to get smooth, when I switched back to the S2 for a USPSA match this weekend, my S2 reloads were worse too.  I'm finding it is very hard for me switch back and forth.  For context, I am a B-class USPSA shooter and reliably reload in 1.1-1.2 seconds on the clock.

Now I'm thinking I should consider the Phantom instead.  So - does the Phantom have an identical reload angle to the S2? Or is it slightly different?  If they are truly identical, it would make sense for me to standardize on that. If they are also different, even slightly, then I'll just stick with my P-09.

The Phantom is more like the spo1 or spo1 Tactical

I don't have a S2, but I have experienced something similar between my P09 and SP01.  That said, from the few times I've dry fired others S2's, I think the undercut on the beaver tail for the S2 changes the rotation point/pivot point for reloads, not so much the stretch to the mag release but how you present the may well is more towards your body.  I don't think a Phantom would be any better transition.

Of course, I don't think you'd have to be too concerned if you're B class hitting 1.1 reloads unless you're completely dropping mags on the ground.  Even a 1.5 reload will keep you right with the A and M guys if the rest of your skills are at that same level, giving up maybe 1 second on a long course if there's rare standing reloads.  Coming from another B class guy...

I think the S2's higher rear grip tang and 'raked' profile contributes to a slightly higher natural pointing angle compared to an SP-01, but for me it's not as severe as a Glock's.  When I had a P-07 though, that seemed to point particularly high, almost Glock-like, which was surprising.

The issue is that the feed lips are hitting the magwell and jamming up. I'm totally botching reloads.  After several hundred reload reps in dry fire over the past 2 weeks I've gotten smoother and nail them 90% of the time, but my reloads with the Shadow are now suffering and not as smooth.

I think I just need to check out the S2 and the Phantom side by side.  I don't think my LGS will let me try out some reloads though.

I’m curious whether or not you’ve found luck in the phantom?  I also shoot a s2 for USPSA but use p10 series for everything else.  Grip angle is similar enough, although the p10 grip is slightly longer.

Very funny that you just posted this now. It's been a couple years since I've signed into the forum. But after 4-5 years shooting P320 platform pistols, I'm going back to CZ for a variety of reasons.

I did wind up getting a Phantom back in 2018 ish. It was good for what it was. However I sold it since there weren't any magwells available back then and it appears that is still the case today. I would like to get another Phantom for nostalgia's sake, but the aftermarket support on it for holsters, magwells, other grips, etc is all minimal at best, and will only get worse over time, not better, as it's been discontinued for several years now.
