Problem with P-09 CGW Pro Grade Install
« on: March 01, 2018, 11:26:00 PM »
I just picked up a used P-09 with a user-installed Pro-Grade kit.

Two issues:

(A) The SA trigger is too light far lighter than my CGW-installed Pro-Grade Kit in my P-07.

My trigger gauge has gone missing but it feels about 2 lbs which is too light for a carry pistol.

(B) The second issue in SA is that the trigger is almost touching the frame when it releases the sear.

DA trigger is very smooth.

Springs in the Pistol:

(1) Yellow Mainspring Housing/Hammer Spring.

(2) Thicker 0.020 CGW Sear Spring

So it has the proper springs and it has the other Pro-Grade Kit parts that I can tell plus I have the OEM parts with the pistol.

QUESTION

Any insight from anyone who has experienced this?

I have a spare Pro-Grade Kit so if I have to I could swap out all of the parts but I'd much prefer to troubleshoot and replace only what is required.

Thanks in advance.

Kevin

I believe I would call CGW.  I'm sure they would know best.
I remember when "Common Sense" was common.  I must really be old!

LOL!

I'm sitting here in Baton Rouge, it's sunny and I'm off work thinking, "it's only 3.25 hours to CGW..."

Problem Solved

I did phone CGW and they advised using the OEM TRS. I was disappointed and thought that I had purchased a pistol with poor tolerances/QA/QC so I did what any engineer would do: I took a nap!

When I woke up I reviewed a few videos and then began my journey.

I thought to myself, "the roller bearing, Kevin. Check the roller bearing."

So I did.

I checked the OEM (0.225) and I checked the one installed in the pistol and it was 0.20!

So I put in 0.225 DA roller bearing.

So then I became more alert to what I was looking at. So
I pulled my CGW P-07 and noticed the triggers were different. So I pulled a P-09 Pro Grade and it's trigger matched my CGW P-07 Pro Grade!

So the original owner installed a trigger that allowed a shorter reach - maybe 5mm. So the SA trigger was releasing the sear far too close to the frame.

I CHOSE to use a new sear; I don't think it was needed. I may go back to the one installed as it had worn in well.

With the heavy sear spring and OEM trigger return spring it's got a heavy trigger pull but it is smooth.

The TRS is a small pain but the decocker spring ... GRRRRR!!

But in 12 hours I've assembled and disassembled the P-09 four times so I'm not intimidated. You just cannot be in a hurry.

Next Steps

Check the DA & SA trigger pulls.

If the SA is 4 lbs or so then I'll put in a new CGW trigger return spring and may as well reinstall the original sear.

Then recheck the trigger pull weights.

Lastly, order more small parts:

(1) Decocker Springs
(2) One CGW Trigger w/ Overtravel & Screw
(3) One Slide Stop

This is a neat platform; very tunable and not at all complicated (decocker spring and trigger return spring installation notwithstanding.

Man, I hear you. I went a little crazy trying to get similar triggers between my 09 & 07 - took the guns down and back probably 20 times within a week or so. They are pretty neat - and once you do it enough, pretty easy. But that decocker is tough.

So, you are ordering more de-cocker springs? Just curious as to why - Are they prone to wear or breakage?
My 09 decocker is a good bit "easier/lighter" and I believe its because I've done a lot more dry fire with it, I have wondered if it could be getting "sprung"? ;D
List of guns here?

Having a stash of parts is wise.

I had a spare set of DA Rollers (will replace the one I used); I have trigger return springs because eventually they fail; everyone needs an Extractor Ass'y no matter the weapon and the sear spring and ejector spring could easily be lost (Tip: dip the end that will be inserted into a viscous (thick) grease before you insert them - they then won't fly out even if you turn the pistol upside down and shake it vigorously).

The decocker spring should not be a high maintence item. I just handled it so much over the past 12 hours I think I might have better luck with another one. 🤣[emoji23]
