Gun Control in Canada
« on: March 13, 2018, 10:52:47 AM »
So it appears that our Manchild Prime Minister and his lackeys are using the Florida school shooting to further restrict our gun rights here in Canada.

One of the statements was that they were going to amend our transportation of handgun laws. Give me break. As it stands now the only place I can shoot a hand gun is on an approved gun range. I can't take it out on public land where I can take a 50 BMG. I can't shoot it on my own land even I own 10,000 acres of short grass prairie with no one around for 100 miles. I can't shoot it n the vast arctic tundra with no one around for 1000 miles.

Our PAL allows us a recently devised transportation authority. I can take from place of purchase to my home. I can take it a an approved gunsmith. I can take it to a border port of entry to shoot in US or international competitions. This is allowed only by the "most reaonablly shortest route".

So what more restriction can they place on transportation? Well, they want to go back to the previous system where you basically had to make a call and get an approval for any of the above (except we used to have a blanket approval to carry from our home to the range by the most "direct" route possible).

I suspect that there is a new law wanted that would require us to call for even taking them to the range.

They did a poll of supposed gun owners and claimed that 98% of gun owners were in favour of banning all semi autos. Turns out they fudged just a wee bit on the stats. As in it was complete lie.

I checked the murder stats to compare my province of Manitoba with neighbouring and demographically similar North Dakota and Minnesota. Turns out they both allow concealed carry and their murder rates are substantially lower than ours. But don't confuse them with the facts. They watch Hollywood movies and TV and they know the truth.

It must be wonderful to live in North Dakota where you are treated like and adult instead of living in Canada where our part time drama teacher and wanna be celebrity child PM treats us like he is the adult and we are the children.

Youse Yanks should be very thankful and grateful to your founding fathers for the 1st and 2nd amendments. No one else in the world has them and those nations that don't are free in name only. Our rights are exercised at the prerogative of the state. Our British common law is ignored now since we now have a paper tiger constitution.

God bless America.

What we really have to do is ask why our young people have become such a murderous and violent bunch in the last 30 years.
Professing to be wise they became fools.

Sorry for the restrictions you have to bear for what we consider a God given right.
Thank you so much for this post it should make all of us in the USA more appreciative. Well said sir!

Grew up in northern New York during the 70's primarily, looked across the river every day to Canada.....used to be able to boat there as a kid or cross the bridge for baseball tournaments without any hassles, I always kind of thought of it as part of my home town.  Now when I visit my hometown.....there are random US Border Patrol checks points on the US roadways, you just get stopped and questioned for no reason and if you choose not to answer (errr.....exercise your rights) the US Border Patrol can/will/do detain you. My hometown was/still is kind of like a Norman Rockwell painting, was great place to grow up as a kid......I haven't been and won't be back since I experienced how things have "changed".........seems you all in Canada are just a bit ahead of how some would like things here in the US.  Thanks for sharing your dilemma .......  ???

We used to travel from Northeast Ohio to Roseneath Ontario Canada and spend a week fishing every summer back in the 70's. Those were great times but you could see it changing by the early 80's. Now they hassle the tourists and welcome the terrorists.

Out of curiosity, what would it take for you to have your own "approved" range? If 10,000 acres isn't enough, what is?

We certainly are. Every day. The fundamental principle that separates the US (and one that many Americans sadly fail to appreciate) is that the fundamental human right to life and liberty is bestowed upon us by our Creator. Our fellow human beings don't do that. They can only take them away. Many in our own government, and including at least one sitting US Supreme Court Justice, absolutely hate that fact. They think rights are conferred upon us by the state. They're wrong.

Believe me I feel you pain.  I am an Australian citizen.  So I moved to the US (not California or the like)!

I have heard that some people have an approved range on there property but have never met one. It would have to go through some kind of approval process by Big Brother in the form of the Provincial Chief Firearms Officer. Most of them are Ex RCMP who are anti-gun and really don't know as much as they think they do. I would doubt they would be very supportive and would make ridiculous requirements in order to make it next to impossible.

Even our local club has been ruled by them for about a decade now. Being bureaucrats they have to justify their existence by coming up with new and stupid regulations. The have prohibited the use of shotguns of any kind because there are houses within a mile! I don't think a slug would travel a mile. You can shoot a 338 Lapua but not a shotgun. We also can't shoot steel of any kind.Paper only. The CFO told us we could shoot steel if we basically buried it in the berm- like in cave. Wouldn't that be convenient? But it gives you an idea of the BS we're up against.

The club has been around for at least 50 years. The ditches were not running with blood from us shooting each other or hapless bystanders. No matter. The government meddle workers have take-over and we will probably never get rid of them.

We really need a range protection law like many US states have so that if the club was there first then anyone moving in nearby has no recourse to get the range shut down. The problem is that so many Canadians are sheep.

Scottyboy, I have considered that. Actually my family came fro the US about the time the War of Independence. I found out that I have an ancestor that fought in the Civil War on the side of the Confederacy. Not sure what all that was about but I'd sure like to know. I know they came from North Carolina where he went back to fight. Maybe some day Alberta will separate from the rest of the country. Might be worth moving back there in that case.

Thank you for pointing out the significance of the US constitutional protection of free speech and self defense. So many Americans today take this for granted. They just don't understand what restricted speech is, so they don't appreciate their other protected rights .

You have a great land and decent people, just manipulated by socialism.  Our condolences.

The answer to this is really quite simple. Every decent moral and social construct has been removed, legalized drugs, legalized immoral behavior, the demonization of discipline to the point that children are allowed to run adults and have no fear of consequences for their actions no matter how heinous.
The everyone gets a trophy because you're special just because you're you crowd. Liberalism has destroyed the child just as it has in every other area where it has been applied.

Canada is being destroyed by our own government. It's almost embarrassing to be Canadian these days. The government is allowing "refugees" in by the hand full. Many I'm certain are linked to terrorism. They've even changed the rules of citizenship to accomadate these people and pay them money to get their lives started here. And if it's against your religion, you don't even need a photo on you firearms licence!
Our criminals and terrorist are allowed to have guns. They don't need anyone's permission have and use them as they see fit. And when the government wants to look good "stopping crime" they target the licenced gun owners. They even charge people with criminal offences just becasue one defends themselves, family, or property. Their backward thinking is very sad and frustrating. If we don't have freedom of gun ownership and self defense and religion (and that too is eroding) what freedom do we really have?
You Americans are fortunate for sure. Some days I want to pick up and move and become American. Alas, everyone has problems. If it isn't 6 of one it's half a dozen of the other.
Unless we get a government who will dramatically change things then I think we will lose all our rights in the future. So sad.

At least some of us recognize that freedom is fragile. As incredible as it may seem, recently the right to self-defense is at risk, being attacked by young people actively agitating to have their freedom taken away. They have learned nothing from history. They aren't even learning anything from the present (I'm thinking of Venezuela, a shining example of socialism).

Sure, freedom and liberty can be taken by force; that's usually been the case throughout history. It's quite a different matter when people demand it. It's quite a shocking development to me.

You Americans are fortunate for sure. Some days I want to pick up and move and become American.

A lot of what you wrote can be said of the United States, but the US is unique in that anyone from anywhere can immigrate and become an American. I can't go to Canada and become Canadian any more than I can go to Ireland and become Irish. Come to America. We need more people like you.

V35, I feel honored right now.
It would be an honor to join you.
I see that freedoms are being attacked everywhere.
It appears that you're on the winning side. It would be nice to be patriotic in a country that mostly backs you up.
We actually do have laws that allow defence and the carry of fire arms but the powers that be don't recognize that. They just say no.

We would be honored to have pro rights firearms owners join us in the United States. I am Very fortunate that I live in Arizona, with Constitutional Carry where I can load my sidearm and carry it openly or concealed with no permit, license, registration, waiting period, magazine restriction, size restriction, FOID, nada. We would be VERY happy to have more people move down here who support these values...but you might not like the summers. ;)
