Anyone own a Springfield XD9?
« on: April 29, 2005, 07:31:04 AM »
I was at the range yesterday and the guy next to me let me shoot his XD9 while he tried my CZ40B.  I was pretty impressed with it.  Felt good in the hand and I was suprised by it's accuracy.  To tell you the truth, I shot it better yesterday then my CZ40 and CZ75.

Anyone else have one of these and how do you like them compared to your CZ's?

The best gun I own is the Springfield XD Tactical 5 inch in .40SW.  It is my favorite pistol by far.  The Springfield XD series is superior to Glock in my opinion.  I have never shot a more accurate combat pistol with a better center of gravity and controlled recoil with a smooth, crisp trigger.  The Springfield XD series took everything from Glock and made it better,  nothing against Glock,  I am a HUGE Glock fan, but XD is the pinnacle of polymer frame evolution.  ,but thats just my opinion,  I am glad you enjoyed it. I am assuming you shot the 4 inch service model, which is also great,  for concealed carry, they also have a great 3 inch subcompact version in 9 and 40.

Polymer frame copied from Glock who copied from H&K, everything else is mostly SIG and of course, a CZ shaped grip frame and 1911 grip safety. Supported chambers in all calibers and the ejection port is properly cut for relief. I agree, the best .40 I have ever fired and XD's have long chambers that will not restrict the length of handloads!;)

I have an XD9 that I got about 1 1/2 years ago. It's not as accurate for me as my CZ75. I'm sure it's the weight difference though. At first I had one minor issue with my XD. I had never owned a smaller caliber polymer pistol that I would put more then 100 rounds through in one range session. I also only lightly lube the rails of my pistols. Well when I'd get up to around 100 rounds down range I'd get some stove pipes or the slide wouldn't fully return to battery. I also generally used Miwall factory reloads. After I'd clean it, every thing was good for another 100 rounds and then it would stovepipe, ya da ya da again. I was beginning to feel this pistol was not reliable. I tried other new ammo with the same results. Well one day I had a friend with me who was a pistol instructor in the Coast Guard. He looked at it pulled the slide off and said I was to dry. Put the slide back on, generously lubed with oil, cycled the slide and I never had that problem again. Now when I get up to around 75 round count I just oil the rails and don't have any problems.

I don't have this problem with any of my other pistols. I've been looking for some kind of grease I can use on this guns rails so I can shoot a complete session without a relube.

Other than that one issue the XD is really great and I think it would be a fine concealed carry gun. I'd love to try the .40 Tactical model though.

I've got a XD 40 cal.  Points well, shoots well, great trigger, has never given me the slightest feed problem in over 750 rnds.  Loving the gun, let me say what it's drawbacks are.  I don't like it's bulky form factor, compared to the CZ75.  The finish began wearing off of the slide's corners within the first month, and that was from putting the gun in my blue-jeans hip pocket, nothing more.  The factory sights lost their white-dots within six months.  Fixing these problems, I'm sending the gun to Springfield to be refinished with Armory Kote and the sights are going to be Mepro NS. The repairs are free--life-time warranty.

I got my CZ after my XD. I was amazed at how much more I liked my XD's trigger.  But I was also amazed at how much less the CZ's 5" barrel mattered for a CCW than the bulk of the shorter XD.  I find that slim & long is more comfortable to conceal than less long and bulky.

The XD also has a relatively hight grip position in relation to the bore axis, which is another factor in making it shoot well.

Another thing I like about the XD is this: you can take an XD in 40 S&W or .357 Sig, buy a barrel in the other cal., plus in 9mm. Potentially, you can have three guns in one. I've been told the mags will work with all three, so you'd only need the barrels.  I like the .357 Sig too, so that's on my list to buy.

I like both guns. I carry both. I'll like my CZ better with a well worn-in trigger.

It was the tactical with the 5" barrel, and as Dietrich said, it is pretty bulky compared to the CZ.  I can't say the trigger felt better, just different.  It makes me wonder about the differences in ergonomics and pistol design that may allow a shooter to shoot one gun better then another.

Ergonomics is a very personal and subjective thing and is a function of hand size, posture,  shooting style, etc, etc.
In the end, what matters is that you have made the right choice for YOU.

I didn't care for my XD9 4".  The LOP from trigger to back of grip was way too short for my big hands, and I never got used to the trigger.  No matter what I did it wouldn't shoot accurately for my tastes...hence the 75BD now.

I think most people have better luck with the XD's if they have smaller hands.

That is very true and describes me as well.

Don't own one, but I had a chance to shoot an XD (.40, compact version) over the weekend.

Nice piece.  Not difficult to handle, at all.

Guy's I load quite a bit of ammo and I test my loads pretty thouroughly, and from the bench, so let me tell ya'll something I caught myself doing wrong while I was testing handloads in the XD Tactical .40. I started out shooting revolvers and many of them have glass breakingly good triggers. When I got some sub-standard groups in the XD that had already demonstrated outstanding accuracy, I thought in frustration. Whathu hell is goin' on round heyar!

I took a grasp and realized I was using the precision revolver trigger system of trying to fire with the first pad of my shootin' digit. That is the proper technique for SA trigger control and I've seen about a gazillion gunwriters telling shooters to do the same when shooting autos SA pistols or DA pistols. No wonder they only shoot 1911's. If you're like me and feel that there was a worthwile reason for that pistol to have a DA trigger to begin with and actually use it, and I do, I have learned not to attempt a transition to a different control. I fire in SA just like I do in DA with my finger engaged just past the first joint with DA autos. I also have large hands and long fingers, usually extra large on the glove thing. Anyway I went back to a DA type trigger engagement and guess what? I thought to myself, yeah that's the ticket because groups with the XD were again where they should be.

This is a single action pistol (irregardless of the USA trigger BS unless they mean USA liability), but it don't have a custom 1911 trigger, so keep that in mind. Also, I believe in the near future, if not presently, there will be very good replacement springs to get about a 3 lb. trigger on the XD, and since this pistol has a sear, a simple change to a lighter sear spring and maybe trigger spring could change things dramatically. Just hang in there, it's comin!;)

for those interested,  Springfield Armory also offers a 4 inch service model in .357SIG and a subcompact in 3 inch.  9mm or .40SW.

Can't stand the one my friend has myself but if CZ57 says that they can shoot good, I will defer to his opinion.  HE got me HOOKED on Sig's!

Hiya Kevin!  :lol

Hey Crew Chief! Wow, my head is swellen'!

Got confirmation on something that really made my day. If you own the XD-T in .40, you can get a 9mm barrel from Bar-Sto and since the Croatians were smart enough to copy the SIG internal extractor. You guessed it!

2, 2, 2 guns in one!;)
