SP01 customizations - what to do?
« on: March 26, 2018, 10:19:57 PM »
Hi everyone,

I?m real new to the handgun world, picking up my SP01 this coming Saturday after my 10 day wait. Since I can only research until the weekend I?m reading lots about CGW upgrades. Clearly everyone is thrilled with their pistol when they get it back, but I?m seeing so many packages and things you can do.

Is there a good reference out there or words of wisdom as to why people choose one package over another?  Or something that explains what the benefits are of a change to a novice?  I?ve seen bushing, guide rod, trigger, etc. all mentioned by many. Is there a list things this group would recommend as musts/minimal things to consider.

I know I need to learn the ins and outs and get proficient with the gun first, but all these upgrades has my curiosity peaked.

Thanks in advance for your input.

^^THIS.

I estimate I put 500 rounds through my P-01 before I had a sense that I even wanted to change anything.  As a daily carry pistol, it felt pretty good each time I took it to the range.  However, I started getting a bit tired of the long pull on the DA stroke after decocking it, and it was pretty heavy.  The single action could use just a tad bit less reset as well.  I talked with CGW on the phone, who recommended their defensive carry package.  I just installed it this past Sunday, and with dry firing it feels pretty bleep good.  Tomorrow I take it to the range and run it through some ammo...

Play with it first, for sure.  I have a SP-01 and CZ 75BD that haven't been touched yet.  No reason to so far.  YMMV.

SP01 customizations - what to do?

Boo2112 hit the nail on the head.
OP, upgrades are purely a personal choice. Are you new to shooting in general, or just handguns? I only ask because if new to shooting, I completely agree with boo2112. Get to know your pistol. Learn the trigger etc.
Once you get used to it, then you?ll be able to decide what, if anything you want to change. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for all the replies.  New to pistols.  About two years overall so still generally new to the whole experience. Did make a trigger change to my rifle that I really liked.

I know I definitely need to try mine for a good spell first.  Need to save my pennies for a while as well.  In the meantime was hoping to learn why people choose to upgrade certain components since that part is very foreign to me.

Another recommendation to shoot a few hundred or more rds through it first.  Get a feel for the pistol, accuracy and what you would like to improve. Use decent but nothing fancy ammo.
  Enjoy it.

For me, I came to CZ?s from shooting revolvers. Triggers in a revolver have little to no play in them. I could shoot my Rami just fine, but didn?t like the take up (slop) in the trigger. So I ended up with the Short Reset (SRS) and Type 2 disco. This took most of the slack out of the trigger, making it similar to the manual of arms I was used to.

Then for my birthday a couple years ago I installed the full Pro Package in my SP01 Tac. It is wow, just wow[emoji16] 10x bushing is on the list just for fun. But it?s just my range toy and as much as I like it, I don?t think I want the hammer at this time in my other CZ?s. (Personal choice)
My Phantom is the HD, so it has the same as the Rami, SRS and T2 disco. The P01 is mainly my wife?s. We got her a Kadet kit to put on it for her to learn to shoot. Ended up with the SRS and the Reach Reduction Kit (RRK) with the modified T2 disco to help with the trigger reach.

As you can see, my choices were for specific reasons. Oh and be forewarned, CGW can be just as addicting as CZ themselves.
Hope that gives you a bit of insight as to why I added or didn?t add parts.

I agree with boo2112, shoot it first, a lot, then find out what you need, don't listen to what everyone says you need.

Upgrades are a personal preference driven by the shooters preference.

I must agree with the wise advice provided.  The SP-01 is a very well designed and proven design.  The CZ-75 platform is, inarguably, one of the finest combat pistols ever designed.  Shoot yours.  Shoot it a lot.  Let it tell you what works best for you.  Then determine, what, if anything, might need to be tweaked.  Out of the box, these pistols are rock solid.

I can't really add any new wisdom here because the advice so far is spot on. You being new makes it so you may not even know if you need any upgrades or appreciate them yet or not. A new rifle trigger is a very noticeable upgrade. If you like what you are holding and can shoot it well, then you probably have what you are looking for. Next step would be to find someone with a "upgraded" SP-01 and shoot that. see if the difference is noticeable and the results are worth the investment.

I have one or two CZ and I have upgraded my SP-01 and it is amazing. It was, to be fair, pretty dang amazing as an out of the box handgun as well. I like the improvement. To get a good job done costs a few bucks, some find the value in it others do not. I have upgrade a few lesser pistols and they are not as nice as the SP-01 was before upgrades. Like others before me have said shoot it, enjoy it, don't be too fast to tweaking it, but tweak it if you want to. Either way you own an awesome handgun!

I used this guide to set up my SP01 for competition and have been really happy with it.
 http://forums.brianenos.com/topic/191773-cz-tuning-101-with-professor-atlas/

I used the "production legal" kit  and got the gun down to 5.5 lb double action / 2.5 lb single action and it's running great.

I'd point you towards the defensive carry kit as I would not be comfortable carrying mine safety off / hammer down. Order spares of the lifter spring, trigger return spring, and firing pin retaining pin.
 https://cajungunworks.com/product/75439-defensive-carry-package-for-manual-safety-cz/

It's not the same internals, but I put the defensive package in my P07 and it's just a night a day difference. 8.5 double / 2.5 single action. Double action was at least 12 lbs when I got it and pretty gritty beforing polishing.

Polishing in the right places makes a big difference as shown in the guide. When you change from the heavy springs that come standard, you need to smooth the metal to metal contacts and reduce the loss of energy due to friction so you keep the reliability. This also improves the feel in the trigger.
