Shadow 2 and Tactical Sport preferred ammunition
« on: April 08, 2018, 10:38:00 AM »
I have been a Dan Wesson fan for a very long time. While I've looked at CZs pistols for a while, I've never really pulled the trigger on one, literally or figuratively. That is, until the last two weeks.

Vermont, unfortunately, has fallen to gun control legislation. I used to be one of the least restrictive states AND one of the safest. I think Alaska was perhaps the only other that rivaled the freedom of Vermont gun laws. Being a largely rural state, hunting is also very big. However, two weeks ago the legislature passed three bills related to gun control. One had to do with Domestic Violence, one the age of purchase, a third private sales and transfers and the last, a ban on magazines exceeding 10 rounds for rifles and 15 for pistols. It's clear there are those who want to push it further, but this was all they were able to do. The bills have not yet been signed into law, but that will likely happen this week.

So, as you might expect there was a run on my local FFL. Given the shortness of the time, you're limited to what they have in stock or what they receive before the law goes into affect. While browsing I saw a Shadow 2 Blue which I bought with probably eight magazines along with the three that came with the gun. Then, five days later, because I don't want to fill out the paperwork to go to my local LE or the ATF, I went back and found a Tactical Sport (2005 version, no color designation) on consignment. I've been wanting one of these for a while. My guess is that once the law is passed, given it's interpretation, my FFL would not be able to sell a gun with 20 round magazines even though it is in their inventory, because being on consignment, it is essentially a private transfer. So, I bought it.

Long story, but this is my question; What brands of 9mm do CZs, especially these two pistol prefer? What have you found that works well? I've had other pistols that just won't run well with certain brands of 9mm often because of how the rounds are loaded, often under powered. I'm thinking not so much here of competition, but target shooting.

I use Freedom for both when I shoot competition/plates/steel.  124 gr. for the Shadow 2, 147 gr. for the Tac Sport Blue.  Both very light kicking, the 147's print a bit higher which works for me with the sight picture on the TS which I prefer to hold at 6 o'clock.  The S2 is more POA/POI.

My shadow 2 and TSO likes 124/125 Gr ammo. Since I reload, I tailor my recoil springs to my reloads which meets minimum power factor for USPSA minor.

I?ve been using American Eagle 124gn FMJ?s in my Shadow 2 for matches. It?s a bit warm (135-139 PF depending on the day) but works great.

I run a 10lb recoil spring.

Probably 90% of the people on this forum reload their own target ammo, including me. The twist rate on almost all 9mm CZ pistol barrels is set for 124gr bullets.

While it is possible to find 147gr ammo or reload 147gr bullets that shoot well in the CZ, Probably only 30% of the 147gr commercially made ammo will chamber in the CZ. So if you desire to purchase 147gr ammo, you had better follow the recommendations of other owners.

If you are unsure of fit and see a local ammo sale (of any weight), it is always wise to take the barrel with you. In eastern Europe only RN ammo is available, so that's what the chamber is cut for. In the USA we have tens of ogive shapes and not all of these are commercially loaded to fit the CZ. Since ammo is generally non-returnable, it's always best to check before you buy. Or ask questions here.

I just shot my CZ TSO over the weekend and I used the job ammo, Speer Gold dot 124gr +p and the TSO handled it better than MY on/off duty Sigs. I did that for the first 25 shots and moved on to American Eagle TSJ 124gr and it was a much softer shot. I was testing this as my competition load, as I plan on using the TSO in USPSA limited. I'm waiting for a case of American Eagle 150gr to come in, and I will probably use it for the competition. Really hope I get a chance to test it before the competition.

As you solicited and we replied, the CZ chamber will not digest many of the heavy weight bullets, especially those in commercial loads.

...and I will probably use it for the competition.

Probably. But probably not in a CZ pistol.

Really hope I get a chance to test it before the competition.

You had better make time for some testing before the competition. This stuff is the playground for Murphy's Law.

Ive used the 150 syntech rounds in both a tso and shadow 2 with no problems.

I also hand load 147 blue bullets, and the 125 truncated cones w no problem. OAL on the 147 is about 1.17-8.poly

Could use advice on powder. Had a lot of tite-group, a pain to measure, and bullseye, dirty.

What powder do folks prefer for poly bullets. (The recommendations are all over the map, so I might as well ask again.)

And what do people load? Ive been using both 3.6 and 3.1 in TG for the 125. very little recoil at 3.1 in the 125, cycles gun fine, but not sure it will meet power factor. Thoughts?

3.1 will not make power factor for 124/125gr lead or coated lead.  3.6 will, though not by much, PF127/128-ish, depending on bullet -- no reason to shoot a PF that low.  My loads with various 124/125gr coated lead and Titegroup were in the range of 3.7gr-3.9gr, depending on the bullet, in a power factor range of 132-135.

I've been really happy with Sport Pistol.  It meters well, burns clean (little soot), and is very accurate in my TSO (40 cal).  I haven't tried it in anything else yet but I probably will work up a 9mm load with 125gr coated lead RN and 45 cal 200gr coated LSWC eventually (not any time soon).  If I see the same improvement in accuracy that I saw with the TSO, I will be a happy customer.  I went from 2 inch to 1 inch groups with sport pistol in my TSO using some really crappy undersized pull down plated bullets (both 165 and 180gr RNFP).  I can't wait to move onto my next bullet which is a 165gr FMJ, that should be a one hole group!!!

Cheers,
Toby
