The BREN 805 has ample room to make the 7.62x51 work...BREN in 308 would be....amazing.

Actually, I think converting an 805 to 6.5 grendel would make the most sense.  Heavier receiver and no last shot bolt hold open in particular mean from weapon balance and speed of operation, an 805 is better suited to a stand off weapon w/ a longer barrel.  6.5 Grendel is also an option, but from cost per round, ballistic performance, and optimal barrel length comparisons (w/in 2" of one another, starting at 20-22" for Grendel and 22-24" for CM), the Creedmoor is much superior at all ranges and minimal penalties relative to Grendel.  So if you're not restrained to a 5.56 magwell, then go creedmoor over grendel.

Actually, building the 805s into designated marksmen rifles and 806 into carbines seems like a no brainer, but uncertain about whether parts, armory, etc, logistics make that more imprudent than first blush analysis.

I look at the 805 as a rifle and the 806 as a carbine.  For a carbine w/ 12-16" barrel, I like 7.62x39, 5.56, 6.8 spc, and .300 blk, and in that order.  YMMV.

Seeing the video, it seems that Hungary (at least initially) adopted the Bren 2 in 7.62x39mm, but as a member of NATO, they have the ability to swap out barrels, bolts and mags to be 5.56 compatible.  Only one rifle I saw in the video had a 5.56 magazine equipped.

I do wonder where this does place Hungary as far as maybe switching to 5.56 NATO as their primary rifle cartridge, since the Bren 2 is supposed to replace their AM-63 rifles (an AK-47 variant) and they are, after all, a member of NATO.

RSR makes a great point.  Assuming the two models live on together, how should they be positioned side-by-side?

Certainly the Bren 2 has some ergonomic improvements.  However, the 805 seems to be more ruggedly built and has a simpler design and operation.

Perhaps a strategy for the 805 is as a squad automatic weapon like the USMC with the M27.

They are switching over to 5.56...HUNSF already has converted to NATO weaponry...GIGN also uses the BREN 2 in 7.62x39...so there is that...

Unfirtunately for fans of the Bren 805, the two models are not living on together, the 806, or Bren 2 as CZ calls it, is the successor to the 805.  At least that is CZ's plan as of now (ie I am sure if a foreign military contract came in fir the 805 they would t turn it down)

Wonder what the difference is between an 805 Bren .308 and an 806.  IIRC, the .308 805 was never produced...  Maybe just a last shot bolt hold open and the trigger assembly?

Layman's impressions, the 805 appears to have been a SCAR-H setup while the 806 was a SCAR-L...   The Bren 2 in .308 is clearly a different upper receiver, whereas the 805 was intended to be a multi-caliber upper receiver.

Sven -- you going to be making steel reinforced 7.62x39 806 mags?  Availability of reinforced mags will be the crux on whether I personally invest in a 7.62x39 rather than 5.56 Bren 2, and I'd prefer the former -- but don't need either.
