CZ 83 Ammo Question
« on: July 17, 2018, 01:02:25 PM »
Hey all.  I have a surplus CZ 83 in .380 acp coming in.   I reload range ammo for all my .380's.   This is my first surplus gun.  Do I have to worry about any standard loadings in a surplus gun?  I don't load hot anyway, but do I need to load light?  Or can I just follow all published load data between min and max?

I'm not exactly clear on what you mean by "surplus". Do you mean "used law enforcement" sold to the public, something the authorities took off an offender, or "new old stock" sold by CZ USA ? I'm clearly not up on these matters. I suppose it's the former, and that simply makes it well run-in, but still a modern firearm.

I'm not an expert, but to me all proper safety steps should be taken. It should be inspected by a competent gun smith, to make sure it hasn't developed any bad habits (like firing out of battery). Then, if the pistol shows any age or high round count, replace all the coil springs. Finally, any ammo used in it should conform to those appropriate for the model, which you can confirm by calling CZ-USA.

That's just my guess. For an expert opinion you'll want to talk to our resident 380Auto expert...

My surplus CZ 83 handles everything I throw at it including Buffalo Bore +P Hard Cast reliably and accurately.

Somebody has to be in the know!

Make sure the gun is in safe working order before you use it. Thorough inspection as has been suggested. I'd consider respringing the gun since round count is unknown just for your own peace of mind and reliability.
Plunk test your rounds if you are loading your own ammo just to be sure they are not to long for the CZ's chamber.CZ's are know to be short throated. The gun should also on any quality .380 ammo manufactured today. Otherwise you should be good to go.

I got one and it is my only 380.  It is easy to shoot with almost any ammo up to and including hot Buffalo Bore ammo.
