Cracked my Hanks kydex reinforced belt stiffener...
« on: July 22, 2018, 09:01:34 AM »
I have been wearing a Hanks kydex reinforced belt for around a year.  I noticed that it was sagging more than usual recently, and upon inspecting it, I noticed that it had a spot where it was creasing.  I can feel the stiffener is in two separate pieces there.

I sent an inquiry to Hanks about it, and I'm hopeful that they'll repair the belt under warranty.  I have read about similar cases in the past.  Meanwhile I need a new gun belt, so...

I had also been considering a Kore belt already, before my Hanks belt failed.  I like the concept of small adjustment increments.  I find myself often alternating betwen two belt holes on the Hanks, depending on whether I'm sitting or driving vs. standing or walking, to manage comfort vs. sagging.

I went ahead and ordered two Kore gun belts, a leather and a nylon one.  With a promotion code I was able to get two belts and a hanger for 100$ with free shipping.  The nylon or "tactical" belt is supposed to be double stiffness and rated for twice as much weight, 8 lbs vs 4 lbs.

I have also read and seen a few Kore reviews where their plastic stiffeners cracked over time, so I won't be shocked if I have a similar problem with these belts over time as well.  I didn't think I should need a steel-core belt for my P-07 and extra mag, but I guess I'll consider it if I have more plastic stiffeners break on me in the future.

Followup on my Hanks kydex belt issue.

Hanks customer support was very helpful about dealing with the issue.  They offered to replace the belt with one of their steel core belts, free of charge.  They shipped it to me... it arrived today, and I am returning the broken kydex belt to them in a postage-paid envelope.

However, I will say that the Hanks steel core belt is probably too stiff and definitely too thick for daily wear.  It's like two regular belts with the steel core sandwiched in between them.  I'll probably hold onto it for now, but I may sell it, since it doesn't fit my EDC setup at all.

My Kore trakline belts also arrived today.  I'm trying out the leather one now, with my P-07 IWB and extra mag OWB, which in total weigh around 3.5 lbs.  It seem to be up to the job.
