Berry 124gr FP Bullets Fit SP-01 ?
« on: August 15, 2018, 03:28:19 PM »
I'm new to reloading and have no experience with Berry's 124 gr hollow base flat point thick plate bullets, but I have the opportunity to buy 3000 for $180. Which is a great deal and I hate to pass it up, but I am worried that they will not chamber in my SP-01. I hate to buy them and not have them work! Does anyone have any experience with them, will they chamber in a SP-01? I'm using HP-38 any load data would also be greatly appreciated.

I use their 124 hollow base thick plated in RN and the ogive is pretty close and they feed fine in all of my CZ's

Why use 911 when it's faster to use 1911 or 9mm?

That bullet requires a short OAL in CZ's.

Do a search for "Berry's 124 gr FP".

Absolutely true.  You'll probably  be down around 1.065-1.075, but it won't matter.  They'll load and shoot well.   If I were inclined to shoot plated, I'd make that purchase.

Surprised it's a lot shorter load than their round nose heavy plated.

Don't be.  It's really quite simple.  There is a point just forward of the shoulder that makes first contact with the rifling.  How far the bullet extends forward of that point is what determines max OAL.  Since a flatpoint is essentially a round nose with the nose cut off, it's automatically going to have a shorter max OAL. ;)

Thank you for your help. I did do a search before and nothing came up. I realize now that the search bar in the top right does not search the forums and I have to use the search button next to the home button. After reading the other posts on this subject, I think I am going to stay away from these bullets. I just don't think I have enough experience to mess with them. Thank you all for your input and saving me alot of time and money.

Don't be put off. Now that you know what the requirements are for that bullet in your gun, they'll load fine.

Your choice.

BUY THOSE BULLETS !

They will load and shoot extremely well in your CZ. I might not enter a shooting contest with money at risk using those bullets, but you'll be easily able to get 2" groups at 40 feet using them. They will do the job and serve you well.

If you don't want them, then I'll gladly buy them from you !

How can you loose ?   ;)

The shorter OAL comes from the presence of the sharp shoulder, which brings the full 0.356" dia out in front of the case mouth.

As per the example in the cartoon on the far left.... it's that sharp corner on the shoulder which strikes the rifling, thus shortening the OAL in CZ pistols.

Thanks for the help guys. I just got scared because of all the problems Dr. Sick had with these bullets and me having only a couple hundred rounds under my reloading belt makes me a little nervous, but a push from Wobbly and Painter makes me feel more confident. Unfortunately the person that is selling the bullets is out of town for a week. So I won't be able to get them and start working with them until next week. That gives me plenty of time to research!!! I just want to thank you guys again. I'm sure that I will have more questions once I get the bullets and am extremely thankful to have you all as a reference. Especially since I don't know anyone else that reloads. Your knowledge amazes me!!!

I've used exactly that bullet in my Cz SP01 and many other 9mm Pistols, without issue!  I also like the Berry's plain Flat Base 124 grain Flat Point as well.
Accuracy has been superb!!!  :)

In the interim you need to be working on...

? Your method of seating these for best OAL. You can seat these bullets with either flat anvil or a SWC anvil... it all depends on what brand seating die you use as to what's available.

? And then 1) what powder will you use, and 2) what will you be doing with the loads? We can be planning your load development.

Don't be skeert.

Once you do a push test and determine the OAL your pistol needs it's just developing your load. Then it's just cranking the handle.

We'll be here if you need help.
