Easiest method for re-installing P-07 / P-09 decocker spring?
« on: August 28, 2018, 04:49:12 PM »
I have two P-07's which I have detailed stripped and reassembled, several times now, but I still find myself struggling with getting the decocker spring back in place during re-assembly.  I have tried needle nose pliers, and a small flat-head screwdriver, with no success, but what I find does work is a large flat-head screwdriver to push the spring's end down and into place.  However, it still takes me more attempts than I'd like, so I was wondering if anyone had a good "one shot" method to consistently get that spring back into place?

Notch the screwdriver tip.

Thanks, Joe.  I have watched several of your videos, but I hadn't seen that one.  That makes it look easy.  I guess I need to find a sacrificial screwdriver and try that out.

I always used my thumb and just cussed it out until it?s done.   Screw driver trick is far, far better.

These days, I place the spring in its hole, put the levers through and hook them together just a little, rotate the levers straight up, hook the spring on with my finger, then rotate the levers down while squeezing together.  They snap together in place and the spring is already hooked up.

This is exactly how I do it. It is almost easy after doing it a couple times. A person could try the screwdriver method until doomsday and still never get it.

I was about to take a cutting wheel to the cheapest flat head screwdriver I could find in my toolbox, but then found a sort of "purpose-built" tool that should do the job equally well.  It's a cheap spring bar tool, made in China and available off of Amazon for a few bucks, intended for use on watches and watchbands.  It has a notched flat head on one end.  I'll report back on it after the next time I detail strip my P-07's frame, which will probably be after my next trip to the range.

This technique of hooking the spring prior to snapping the decocker together, I may try that too, but I expect to fail at it... it's a mild struggle for me to get those parts lined up and snapped together, which I always succeed at pretty quickly, but to keep that spring in place at the same time, sounds like a frustrating exercise.

I found the easiest way and the most consistent was to install the decocker spring was using
a curved pliers,  I use the pliers where the tip is on the top and the curve is at the bottom, I grab the bottom of the spring with the tip, then push back and to the left slightly, then right and hook and catch the bar.

I also use a magnified eyeglass headset i got at harbor freight tools-- use these all the time
highly recommend for all type of work, having these i don`t worry how the light gives off shadows when working in the frame etc...

Any q. let me know

to clarify:

your holding the pliers with an over grip not an under grip like using a pair of scissors
and the tip of the pliers is facing up and in front of you

Yes, I ordered an identical item like this from Amazon.  The one I ordered didn't have the pins for watch bands though.  It has a flat notched head on one end, and a narrow post with a notched head on the other.  The narrow post works very well for pushing the spring back and hooking it into place.
