Title: Small Rifle Primers CZ Pistol
Post by: Ohmslaw on June 28, 2020, 12:38:59 PM
I know that you can use SR primers in pistols but my question is on your custom type guns with lighter springs will they fire consistently? Example Shadow2 others. I am going to load few and see but was wondering if any of you have experience with this?
Thanks

They are harder for sure. Only reason asking this is now small pistol primers are gone everywhere I still have several but who knows how long this is gonna last. SR are available and I have several too

Due to the higher pressures used in rifle rounds, SR primers are going to have a thicker cup than even magnum small pistol. If your pistol has issues with magnum primers (or even plain old CCI primers), then rifle is going to be even worse.

I can get small rifle primers to fire consistently in my 1911, but I think you'd have a significant problem in a gun that had any modifications to the firing pin, FP spring, hammer or hammer spring. But I've been proved wrong before. I'd certainly like to hear the results of your experiments.

I use small rifle primers exclusively with my Czechmate. No problems lighting them off whatsoever. I also tried them with my MPX and shadow 2 to compare velocity against small pistol primers without any hiccups.

I've used Winchester  small rifle primers in my PCR, and it sets them off no problem.  But with S&B small rifle primers , no such luck.... That's the only two brands I've tried using small rifle primers in.... your mileage may vary.

I tried some of my loads yesterday in 2 pistols all went well. All fired no issues you could tell they were little hotter but no pressure issues all good. If this craziness keeps up long term will be a option
Thanks

Glad that option works. That option does not work with Large pistol/ rifle primers. The 45ACP and 10mmAuto guys will be in trouble.

Odd we have done it with no problem.
Did adjust powder charge lower per the reloading data.

Why does it now work with large pistol/rifle?  I've never looked at a large rifle primer so it might be obvious if I did look at it.

"Large" size has same diameter, but different depths.

I've heard that but can't recall having a problem with them

Those with custom / competition pistols where a S&B or CCI small pistol primer doesn't ignite consistently (if at all) will have many more issues with small rifle primers.

I have pistols that will ignite any primer I've tried and those that require the Federal primers.

I’ve used Winchester SRP in my CZ’s ( PO-1 and my PO-7) without problems, one thing to remember, as a rule you should reduce your powder charge about 1 grain, because the rifle primers DO burn for a longer period of time and burn hotter, they have to, as some rifle powders are harder to get lit, than others. At least that’s what I’ve been told. Anyway, reduce your charge at first, and work your way back up.. That’s the rule of thumb I’ve went with, and it’s always worked..
