Title: Rumor on arfcom that CZ is preparing to by Colt
Post by: M1A4ME on January 10, 2021, 11:33:47 AM
Didn't see a source.  Just figured it was a rumor, but hey, they already make 1911s.

Buy it, move the manufacturing facilities (I hear the equipment is very old, very labor intensive, etc.) to the new CZ plant and buy some modern equipment and "go to town" making 1911's and AR15's.  Maybe some of the Colt revolvers, too.

Seeing how the new Python is made, I doubt all of Colt's equipment falls into the old category. The new Python is 100% CNC machined.

Well talk about buying a junk car that's barely restorable. I hope it's true though and maybe CZ and Dan Wesson can bring them back into touch with reality. Virtually everyone else has learned to cater to the CCW market with a modern pistol but no not Colt their best entry is the re-issued Cobra and that joke of a jam o matic junker the Mustang that never has run right.
Yeah the new Python is fully CNC machined but the roll out was one of the worst ever and they quietly recalled EVERY one that hadn't been sold from the first runs for misfires and cylinders that wouldn't rotate plus a slew of horrendous cosmetic issues that simply should not exist on a $1500 gun.
They simply do need a buy out and some new management strategy.

Well that could be interesting, I suppose.

My King Cobra purchased last year has been excellent. No issues whatsoever and a very smooth DA trigger.

I have to agree, my King Cobra has an excellent trigger, DA on a par with both of my Kimber K6s. The single action is slightly heavier but very clean.

fwiw,

old equipment doesnt make any sense today.

No one wants to pay for craftsmanship, manual labor or headcount to do alot of hand fitting.

What they will buy is the name and the history associated with it.  Dont know about the toys colt is making but they could get the rights to do make them.

if they do buy, it would be interesting to see what CZ says about the reasons.

Looks like more than a rumor.

Yup.

I guess I'm still scratching my head at how the Colt brand offerings are going to compliment/mesh with the CZ and Dan Wesson lines.

Will they acquire Colt, and then just take a hands-off approach and let Colt keep doing what they're doing on their own?

Or will they adjust what Colt offers so it doesn't overlap and compete? I'm thinking mainly of the 1911 market here. For example, does DW become the higher end 1911 part of the business, and Colt focus on offering 1911s for the sub-$1200 market?

What happens with the Colt revolver line?

And then there are the Colt ARs, which I can't believe are selling very well, except on name/historical nostalgia alone. They are quite expensive compared to much of the competition, and not all that up-to-date.

It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out, but in the big picture it seems like a good indicator of the overall financial health of CZ, and their expanding commitment to the (largely) American market.

With the incoming administration the last business I would be purchasing is a firearm business

Are you typically in a position to purchase a large firearms manufacturer? ;)

Think global. The Colt name commands prestige across the world. CZ money with Colt name and tech with CZ money and ingenuity...they are going places all over the place. This might not help US out yet, with an "uncertain future", but world wide markets will benefit.

It would require planning and a considerable effort to surpass the gross incompetence shown by decades of Colt mismanagement.

Well if they do buy out Colt, hopefully the price point will drop to something more reasonable.

Buying Colt gets government contracts

Czech gunmaker CZG's scaled-down IPO secures cash for U.S. plant I wonder if the purchase of Colt will halt or delay the Little Rock Ar. Facility they were supposed to start on this year? Has been pushed twice already due to finances & covid.

I've heard multiple people bring up the point that buying Colt brings U.S. government contracts - what exactly is Colt still supplying to the U.S government/military? Most (if not all) of their production offerings seem pretty outdated by current military standards.

I don't know that COLT has any current contracts but some new blood at the top and some fresh ideas could put them in position to be a player in the future.

For sure. I would imagine they'd also have to update a fair bit of their manufacturing technology as well, since they don't really make anything that was developed in the 21st century.

But if that happens, good on 'em.

Well I picked up a colt combat unit 1911 in .45. Wanted a rail equipped 1911. Recent manufacture. Picked it up and the whole thing rattles. Slide moves, mag well rattle, grip safety rattles.
BUT that barrel was fit just right. And the trigger was one of the best I've felt. Put some target reloads into the same hole at 15yds. Not a single malfunction.
I'll tolerate rattle all day long for that.

My introduction into 1911A1s and .45 acp was with 30 year old Remington Rand, Ithaca, US&S, etc. pistols.  We had an armsroom full of them.  The only Colt in there was the COs West Point graduation pistol.  Never saw it.  But we cleaned the other ones every time we had an upcoming IG inspection.

Then I got to try out for the battalion combat pistol team (made it as one of the shooters).

The best/tightest old 1911A1 in our armory would rattle like a can of nuts/bolts when you shook it.  Best we had, the company armorer and I tried them all out/looked them over before I got one assigned to me for the try outs and training prior to the matches at Ft. Meade that year.

Rattle, rattle, rattle.  I still knocked down one pop up after another at 25 and 50 meters that first morning.  Tryouts on pop ups, I thought, man, this is going to be easy.  Then we went to the matches and it was all paper targets at 25 meters.  Ended up in the middle of a hundred and eighty some shooters.

Loose can also be reliable.

Enjoy it, shoot it, rely on it.  I've had other brands over the years but the only ones I kept were the Colts.

The military service 1911's were intentionally loose to promote reliability in adverse conditions. The trade off is a very short service life and that's why many surplus/decommissioned examples have non original parts and that's what makes an example with it's originals intact worth such a high premium. A 1911 made by Singer Sewing Machine even in mediocre condition last I heard still eclipses most others in value by a wide margin.

We had two or three Singers in the Arms Room.

They were more valuable than the rest even in the late 70's.

We used to sit around and talk about "losing" one as the value was well past the 3 months of 1/2 pay we'd lose for the Article 15.

In the end I found a nice blued Colt 1911 (made in 1917) at Clark Brother's out in Warrenton, VA and bought that for $195 (in 1978).  Still have it.  shot it two or three years ago for it's 100th birthday.  The front sight is slightly bent to the left.  Funny, I'd never noticed it till one of son's friends noticed it and asked me about it.  That rear notch is so thin (as well as the front sight) I can see why they went to the wider front/rear sights on the 1911A1 models.

That old 1911 is what I got used to and I like flat main spring housings to this day.  When I'd buy a 1911 (commercial models) the first thing I'd order for them was a flat mainspring housing.

This may be covered somewhere here or in another thread, but where does the acquisition leave CZ-USA? Was it a US subsidiary of CZ or an independent entity with a contractual relationship with CZ ?

CZ-USA is wholly owned by the CZ Group and was established in the mid-90s by CZ to be the import arm (no pun intended) of its products into the USA.

Imo, Colt is still making very nice revolvers.

Yes, there were a few issues with a few Pythons when they were first released (which got overblown via the 'internet amplification effect'), but that got ironed out quickly and by all accounts, any Python being manufactured now is a sweet revolver that's GTG, and about as nice of a revolver as you're going to buy these days, short of going custom. The Cobras and King Cobras are also excellent and I've never heard of anyone having an issue with one. My King Cobra has been excellent so far, with a great trigger that's smooth as glass.

I'd buy a new Colt revolver before I'd buy a new S&W these days.
