WOW Joe, the Camera of yours takes great pics

Macro lens and flash system are pretty sophisticated, camera body, not so much.  I have a few more years experience with the photography stuff than I do with the firearms.

Joe, what camera/lens did you use?

Joe, what camera/lens did you use?

Olympus 50 Macro, Olympus Macro Flash, two heads, Olympus E-3 body.

Following is an iPhone photo for comparison.  Holes made with pistol above at 10 yards.  I'm right handed.

Same target taken with a "good" camera...

Nice...  (Camera and grouping). Offhand 10 shots in 7 seconds at 10 yards in 1.5", I need more range time.

Maybe next week.  Two more range trips.  Add oil.

Saturday, I'll get to do some of my favorite Kadet drills--paper plates at 50 yards.  Will report if I hit anything. Might have to clean the pistol on Sunday evening if I get in 600 rounds this weekend.

Got in 360 this morning, 160 of that at 50 yards, 10" plates 91% hits.  I'm happy.  Also did some transition drills at 18 yards with five 7" plates, 20 yard and 30 yard groups before going long.  The 91% hit ratio on 10" plates is good.  I've done 95% on 11" plates, but not on 10".  If i were a real shooter I'd be shooting at 7" plates at 50 yards, LOL.

Gun ran perfectly on CCI 22LR Tactical bulk, 36 gr hollow points.  Seem to be as accurate as the 40 gr CPRN I usually shoot but am saving.

I plan another 200 rounds in the morning before I take any more photos of the sear cage.  Schmeky is gonna puke.  But his hammer and sear are absolutely perfect, untouched by me, other than adding some crud.

Gettin' closer.  Didn't shoot the CZ this morning, shot the 308 at 547 yds instead.  So this is at 2030 rounds since last cleaning of the sear cage.  Gettin' real dirty now.  Still functioning perfectly, however.

Another 400 perfect rounds this morning.  About 2500 total since last cleaning the sear cage/frame components.  Now it is getting dirty...

I cleaned the barrel ramp and the firing pin and breech area just 400 rounds ago, so they aren't very bad yet.  When the firing pin hole fills up, its time.  Maybe one or two more range trips, then clean everything.

I was in the Marines a long long time ago and if my Sargent saw this you'd be digging a new head(latrine for you civilians) someplace!

Even I cringed when I looked at these photos after shooting another 340 rounds this morning.  That's enough, I'm going to clean it before shooting it again.  Enough is enough.  Looks like a deep cleaning at 2k rounds is appropriate for these guns.  This one is at around 2700 as of this morning and its too much gunk, even for me.

I might post photos after I clean it this time, so Schmeky can quit worrying about parts abuse.  For a few weeks anyway.  I'll have 'em gunked up again by April if I don't run out of ammo.

All better now...but it was running perfectly before I cleaned it.

Now that is a pretty sear!

Wow. Thanks for sharing. The kadet kits are amazing. I've always wondered how to properly clean that area. Any tips for a novice?

Sure.  Qtips, brake cleaner in a spray can, and an air compressor.

For the frame--Remove the sear cage and clean out all the grunge you can with the qtips before using the spray cleaner.  You may have to use a pick to loosen the stuff in the seams.  Then spray cleaner on the remaining and blow out with air.  Then wipe as much of the surface as you can with a cloth and qtip again.

Barrel and slide--clean the ramp and the chamber and the firing pin hole and breech face using the pick, qtips, brake cleaner, and cloth where possible.  Run a few patches through the bore.

You are better off not cleaning it at all until you can clean it well.  This is why.  Gunk buildup on non contacting parts looks horrible but doesn't hurt anything.  The contacting parts don't get much gunk in them, as it is wiped out of the way each time the parts cycle.  When you use a qtip to clean the parts, you push the gunk in to the contacting areas and actually move the grudge to where it will gum up the parts.  same with a toothbrush.  This is why I don't mess with it until I can really clean it.  All that buildup on the non-contacting surfaces looks bad, but doesn't hurt a thing.  That is the secret.

There is very little of this grunge on the hammer shaft, the sear contact surface or pin, or the sides of the trigger bar.  There is a tiny bit deposited on each shot and it is moved out of the way as the gun cycles.  The non-contacting parts grunge actually builds up and helps protect the moving parts from the tiny bit of residue deposited from each new round.  This is why I don't worry about the buildup at all.

The photos make it look worse than it really is because of the side lighting. Even the "clean" photo looks like the parts are not completely clean.

Thanks, Joe, for the detailed post!

It actually makes sense to me about not cleaning it until you can really clean it. I am guilty of just dabbing in there with a q tip and a toothbrush and probably pushing some of the dirt deeper into it. I'll have to look up how to remove the sear and go find my brake cleaner. I finally have a use for all that brake cleaner i have that has never actually cleaned any of my brakes. Its great knowing that our CZs function fine with all that crap in there.

Thanks again for the cool post.

Well, it's been nearly 2 weeks since I cleaned the Kadet.  So far, I'm at 1,070 rounds...with the weekend coming up.  I'll probably shoot another 300 Sunday.  May have to clean it AGAIN!!

Joe, I too am amazed it runs as well as it does looking like that.
I do find the CCI rounds cleaner than most. Have recently received
some new ammo so I plan to head out to the range tomorrow.

Are you using chlorinated or non-chlorinated brake cleaner?

I usually use Wal-mart carburetor cleaner on my guns, but haven't gotten my poly-coated CZ's dirty enough to warrant that much cleaning yet.

Non-chlorinated.  But I take the grips off before cleaning.  Only polymer gun I have is a Kahr PM-40 and i never clean it, LOL.

I use autozone/ oreily's store brand non chlorinated brake cleaner to get the bulk off.  then i get the rest with hoppes and the wipe down with CLP.
