Title: Favorite CZ .22lr?
Post by: BlackRiver777 on January 28, 2016, 03:35:28 PM
I'm looking to buy my first CZ this weekend, and I just can't decide on a model! I plan on using it primarily for squirrel hunting, but also want to so some target shooting as well. I was originally set on the 455 Varmint, but the more I think about it lugging that heavy barrel around the woods all day doesn't sound like fun. It needs to be able to have a scope mounted to it and the LUX model looks like the iron sights would get in the way, even though the style is probably the nicest looking in my opinion.

Also after reading a review of the 452 American vs the 455 American, I'm not even sure which series to go with! The 452 seemed higher quality, and had an all around better build.

All I have are 452s and they have been great. Sounds like you want an American. Whittaker had a special run of 452s, but sold out last week. Now someone is selling 10 new 452s on gunbroker for 25% more. Not sure which is better, 452/455, but some people will pay a premium for the old style.

The Trainer is nice IF you want iron sights. The ultra lux barrel is too long, IMO, for the field. The American Synthetic with 16.5" threaded barrel would be my pick. Never handled that particular model but my 16" America with wood stock is my current favorite. If it fit in my Silhouette stock I would swap them out in a minute.

452's are harder to find, but they're what I own. If you are going to use  the rifle for hunting and paper you should be able to mount something like a 2-7 or 3-9 behind the rear tangent sight.

i like my 453 Varmint and American.

If youre going to lug it around the woods then go with the lighter version.

Don't sleep on the 512.  Mine has a decent trigger and has had zero issues.  Oh, it is about as accurate as my 452 Trainer.  Besides, someone has to own a semi other than a 10/22!

I think at this point it's between the Trainer and the American. The only 22lr I've owned was a marlin model 60, which is the biggest pile I've ever seen. I'm sure either one of these will be a significant improvement...

Is the accuracy that different from one model to the other? Say between the 455 Trainer and the 455 American?

No. Any model could be accurate, and occasionally you'll get one of any model that just doesn't meet expectations.

Buy the model that appeals to you.

So is there a big gap between the barrel and the stock on the american? Like how does the varmint bull barrel and the american barrel fit in the same stock?
Title: Re: Favorite CZ .22lr?

Obviously there will be a gap if you buy a Varmint and put in the American light barrel. Many have done it and don't seem to mind.

The Varmint barrel wouldn't fit in an American stock

I echo those sentiments and observations on the 512. The "tactical" with the ATI stock set up is a very nice handling design that easily mounts iron, optical and electronic sights on the picatinny rails. The 455 Varmint with the 16 inch barrel is also a handy and accurate shooter. Extra bonus is that they all take the same magazines.

Nice approach!  I have fun with my 452's and 512's and old Brnos, but my 455 lux is my everyday go to .22. :D

Started with 452 Style, bought two Ultras and a varmint (452s) and sold em. Kept grabbing the style to shoot, then learned about CZ pistols...

If you ever see a Style, that dull nickel will hold up to the elements well, and the composite stock is quite good.

Blackriver, my first CZ was a 453 American 22lr. My next was a 452 FS 22lr. I don't do any hunting and the fun I enjoy is punching holes in paper. I understand that you are looking for a rifle for hunting, that you can mount a scope on and is light in weight. Take a look at the 455 American 22lr or Combo 22lr/17hmr for an upper end in the weight. The advantage with the 455 is the capability to swap barrels. If the weight of the 455 American is not to your liking then take a look at the 452 scout 22lr, it is designed for junior shooters with a short length of pull, has a short barrel length (16in), has open sights but you are able to mount a scope on the 11mm dovetail and might be just the rifle you would like for hunting. Just a couple of suggestions.

I chose a 455 Trainer. It gives me the option to use iron sights or a scope, it has a longer barrel than the 455 Lux, and I didn't consider a walnut stock as a "must have" feature. With regard to mounting a scope on a 455 with iron sights, I'll admit it takes a little research and planning but it's worth having both sighting options IMO.

I installed this mount that accepts Weaver or Picatinny rings on the 11mm dovetails: http://www.diproductsinc.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=156323&CAT=3655. Then I mounted this scope using the rings that came with it: http://www.presmainc.com/products/details/100036.

Here are a couple of pictures.

Well, I went and ordered what I believe is a 455 Trainer from Gander Mountain on Tuesday. The thing that makes me nervous is if you look at their website, what is supposedly the Trainer shows a picture of the Lux model.  :o  Of course the guys behind the desk were absolutely no help and told me that "Sometimes the wood just looks different..."  :-\  ::)

@bluzman that is a beautiful gun! How is it shooting with the scope? I heard its difficult with the hogback stock.

@BinhThuyUSN I was actually thinking about getting the American combo, but I really want to get into sport shooting as well as hunting and the tangent sights on the trainer just seemed like it would be a perfect fit for that.
Title: Re: Favorite CZ .22lr?
Post by: bluzman on February 06, 2016, 08:00:04 PM
Actually, the hogback makes the rifle easier to use with a scope, at least in my case. I can heft the rifle, close my eyes, get a comfortable cheek weld and when I open my eyes I'm looking through the scope.

I had the scope bore sighted at a local Academy Sports (they do it for free) but their equipment sets up the scope for 100 yds. I took the Trainer to the local indoor range yesterday to tweak the zero on their 25 yd pistol range. It took me four 3-shot groups to dial in the scope. Here's the result for the next 20 rds (Remington Thunderbolt, 40 gr LRN). I called the two fliers - twitched, he did, said Yoda.  :o The nickel is obviously there for a size reference.

CZ 455 Rifles get my vote. The Ability to break them all down and mix them all up is nice. I mixed a 455 Lux and a 455 Trainer. My reason for this was for my 2 boys to use them on their school shooting team. So now I have the Lux Walnut Stock with a 25" Barrel and Tangent sight from the Trainer for my 13 year old. My 11 Yr. old has the trainer Beechwood Stock with the 20" Barrel and dovetail slide ramp sights from the Lux.
The Inspiration for the mix was that I didn't have the heart to cut the walnut stock. I needed to cut the stock down for my 11 yr old so the length of pull was 11 1/2'' and the Beechwood from the Trainer was the perfect Candidate.

Nicely done. That's a good alternative to the 452 Scout (http://cz-usa.com/product/cz-452-scout-22lr-beech-single-shot-adapter/).

Hi Bluzman. Thanks for the compliment. Heres a Pic if the Hybrid 455. This is my first attempt to add a picture so I'm not sure if I'm doing it correctly. This rifle also has an adjustable butt plate that will increase/decrease the length of pull up to an 1 1/2". This helps to keep my young shooters in the gun longer. :)

As NC_Razz stated that is the 455 Lux barrel. Both the 452 and 455 Trainer has a tangent sight..

Painters' got it. Heres a pic with both mixed. It appears CZ offers the Lux(2nd Gen?) now with Tangent sights. The Ultra Lux? I did this to these rifles before the Ultra Lux was available.

I own two CZ452's.  My favorite would be the FS, for looks.  Both of them shoot very accurately.  The FS has a certain appeal that brings a premium when sold.  A new one just sold for a little over $700 over on Gunbroker.

I can't speak of the 455's, but I have a 452 trainer, and three 452 Americans.  Two of the Americans I bought for my older boys.  They were purchased from Whittakers in November of 2014.  They are my favorite rimfires.

Whittakers had the 452 Americans advertised again yesterday.  You won't find a nicer 22 for the money.
