Favorite CZ .22lr?
« on: January 28, 2016, 03:35:28 PM »
I'm looking to buy my first CZ this weekend, and I just can't decide on a model! I plan on using it primarily for squirrel hunting, but also want to so some target shooting as well. I was originally set on the 455 Varmint, but the more I think about it lugging that heavy barrel around the woods all day doesn't sound like fun. It needs to be able to have a scope mounted to it and the LUX model looks like the iron sights would get in the way, even though the style is probably the nicest looking in my opinion.

Also after reading a review of the 452 American vs the 455 American, I'm not even sure which series to go with! The 452 seemed higher quality, and had an all around better build.

All I have are 452s and they have been great. Sounds like you want an American. Whittaker had a special run of 452s, but sold out last week. Now someone is selling 10 new 452s on gunbroker for 25% more. Not sure which is better, 452/455, but some people will pay a premium for the old style.

The Trainer is nice IF you want iron sights. The ultra lux barrel is too long, IMO, for the field. The American Synthetic with 16.5" threaded barrel would be my pick. Never handled that particular model but my 16" America with wood stock is my current favorite. If it fit in my Silhouette stock I would swap them out in a minute.

452's are harder to find, but they're what I own. If you are going to use  the rifle for hunting and paper you should be able to mount something like a 2-7 or 3-9 behind the rear tangent sight.

but not the ability.

i like my 453 Varmint and American.

If youre going to lug it around the woods then go with the lighter version.

Don't sleep on the 512.  Mine has a decent trigger and has had zero issues.  Oh, it is about as accurate as my 452 Trainer.  Besides, someone has to own a semi other than a 10/22!

I think at this point it's between the Trainer and the American. The only 22lr I've owned was a marlin model 60, which is the biggest pile I've ever seen. I'm sure either one of these will be a significant improvement...

Is the accuracy that different from one model to the other? Say between the 455 Trainer and the 455 American?

No. Any model could be accurate, and occasionally you'll get one of any model that just doesn't meet expectations.

Buy the model that appeals to you.

So is there a big gap between the barrel and the stock on the american? Like how does the varmint bull barrel and the american barrel fit in the same stock?

Obviously there will be a gap if you buy a Varmint and put in the American light barrel. Many have done it and don't seem to mind.

The Varmint barrel wouldn't fit in an American stock

I echo those sentiments and observations on the 512. The "tactical" with the ATI stock set up is a very nice handling design that easily mounts iron, optical and electronic sights on the picatinny rails. The 455 Varmint with the 16 inch barrel is also a handy and accurate shooter. Extra bonus is that they all take the same magazines.

Start with a 455 lux and expand from there.

Nice approach!  I have fun with my 452's and 512's and old Brnos, but my 455 lux is my everyday go to .22. :D
