I finally got my Sphinx back from the factory and got it out the the range. I love the feel and function of the pistol but I really HATE the factory sights. I am consistently getting a POI that is 2-3" low at 7-10 yards. I am attributing it to the poor sight picture I get with the sights, as I do not have that problem with my P07 (which I actually sold to fund this pistol). I am familiar and comfortable with a 3 dot setup and I don't like the blacked out rear sight.
I don't necessarily need night sights, but would like a 3 dot setup for this pistol. I can not find anything that fits the Sphinx SDP, at least that I can find. Has anybody tried any other sights that have worked?
Thanks!
-
Shooting low seems common with this pistol. Mine hit low as well. 2~3" with the 115 gr bullet and almost on target with the 147 gr bullet at 10yards.
I recall someone was recommending one of these Novak low mount sights but removing the rear sight sounded light a PITA.

-
Yeah. I am actually looking for a 3 dot sight.
-
I have a new 10-8 sight coming, as the sights I have on hand have been fit. I'll report back when I have replace it. The 10-8/Novak rear sight is slightly taller, which will raise the POI a little. I'll measure when I have the rear sight off.

That sounds promising. Please kindly report back hopefully with a procedure. I have heard that removing the rear sight on the Sphinx is a PITA. A heat gun and hammer/ pusher are needed, etc.
-
Yep, one set screw came out fairly easily, the other needs heat to break the loctite. I'll probably remove it tomorrow, if I don't get called out. I'll also mock up the 10-8 sight that I have so we can see what it will look like.
-
Thanks. Very interested in this. Any chance that sight has dots on it?
-
No, but I have some tritium Novak's that I can throw on
-
So here it is....
The factory sight height is .290"
The dovetail is .494" on the factory sight.
Novak style sights are either .325", or .375". My 10-8 sight is .325"
The 10-8 sight base (when new) is .500". The sight that I'm using has been previously fit (.480") so there is a small gap under the sight. That should close up with a new sight.
Sight installed.

So filling in the numbers...
5.925" (sight radius) x 2" (low) ? 360" (10 yards) = .033" (sight change either lower front, or raise the rear)
.325" (10-8/Novak) - .290" (factory) = .035"
So this should be pretty close.
-
Awesome! Thanks for taking the time!. Would it be possible to measure the height from the bottom of the dovetail for comparison? I see a small gap under the factory sight. If the gap differed between the two by design, that would change the equation.

Stock ~ .130"
Novak ~.128"
So this would put the difference at .033", which is right on.
Edit:
This dimension

Yeah. I am actually looking for a 3 dot sight.
All my Sphinx pistols have a rear sight with two dots in them that are not painted. To get a 3-dot setup it would be fairly easy to fill in the dots with some high quality paint or have someone who is good at it do it for you. Just a thought - cheaper than buying new sights.
-
Mine do not have the dots...
-
What size bit/wrench fit the rear sight screws? I'm having the same low POI and the rear sight was not mounted straight. Rear sight was mounted slightly off to the right so it shoots low and to the left.
This is good info. Thanks for sharing your findings
-
It's an Allen wrench. Not sure what size, as I have a lot from other sights.
-
New 10-8 sight came. Fits much better than the sight that was fit to another gun. I might try to get to the range tomorrow to try it out.

Looks great!! I love 10-8 parts, especially their rear sight design. I would love to get that sight for my gun.
Do you have a sight pusher or did you use a punch and hammer to remove the old sight and install the new one?
Thanks for sharing the info.
-
I have a sight pusher. Only needed it to remove the old sight.
-
Nice! I didn't realize the SDP's rear dovetail was Novak cut. It's a shame the front sight isn't as easily replaced.
-
Looking at their Instagram account, they are going to make FO front sights, which should be available soon.
https://www.zrtacticalsolutions.com/product-category/zrts-firearm-accessories/sphinx/
-
Nice. I can't believe the tritium / FO combo 'halo' sights are still unapproved for import after 3 going on 4 years now.

Kriss has blown deadline after deadline on that deal. Clearly they dont care about importing the sights.

Any chance of a range report with the new sights? ;D if it lines up I'm doing the same right away! Did not know the rear was a novak cut.
-
Been on the road during the week, and had other things on the weekend. So no report yet. Maybe Weds
-
Here's a picture of the fiber optic sight from their Instagram page:

That looks like a new rear sight as well.

Hey guys, my first post here on CZ. Just picked up my Sphinx sdp compact about a week ago. I've ran about 350 rounds through it already and it runs like butter! Like everyone else mine shoots low. I was reading this post and I don't know if it's the 24 hr shift affecting me or if I'm just not picking up on this sight improvement.
The 10-8 sight that the op is talking about, is this something that was milled down or some how fabricated to fit on a different gun but fits his Sphinx? Or is this a sight that I can pick up from 10-8 and install? I'm just a bit confused. Can anyone help?
I noticed also that the front sight has 4 dots, I'm assuming it's a #4 like some other manufacturers. Since I haven't been able to find shorter front posts for these are there any others anyone has found that work? Thanks to anyone who can help.

In regard to the rear sight on the pistol, it's a Novak cut. 10-8 1911 sights are Novak cut so they fit. Danno_man helped shed the light on that and tried the 10-8 sights.
-
Thanks B I re-read it this afternoon after some sleep and it made a bit more sense. Thanks for speaking up though.
Danno if your around I'd love to hear how this worked for you.
-
Just got in, had to work today, and don't have a free day until next Friday, so no range report yet :(
The 10-8 sight is a direct fit. Doing the math, the POA/POI should be pretty spot on now (my POI was low as well)
Been watching ZR Tactical to see if they released the front sight. Nothing yet.
-
Thanks for the info Danno, I checked 10-8 and found the low mount Novak rear. Plus your calculations are similar to min. At 15 yards im about 2.5 inches low. So this seems like a good fit. I'll order the 10-8 and see if I can get my rear sights off.
-
5 shots, ~15yards, hand-held.
First shot was the lower one.
.325" 10-8 1911 Novak rear sight, factory front.

-
Sweet....and we're you using 147gr ammo?
-
MG 124jhp
I need to work up a load for this, as I will have to load shorter than I do for my Accu Shadow.
-
That's great....so MG 124gr is pretty much POA= POI now?
BTW Danno_man - nice shooting!
-
Yep, pretty much POA/POI
Thanks.
-
Yep, pretty much POA/POI
Thanks.
Did you have to shim up the rear sight? I have read on other forums where they had to shim up the Novak sights to fit the Sphinx dove tail. If I read correctly you didn't need to use the sight pusher when putting the new sight in. Did it just slide right in or did it require tapping in with a hammer (light or heavy taps?)?
-
No need to shim, slid right in.
Used loctite on the dovetail, and on the set screw.
If it becomes an issue, I'll dimple part of the dovetail to prevent slipping.
I'm waiting for a thinner (fiber optic) front sight to come out, as its larger than what I'm used to.
-
Thanks for the feedback. I ordered a Novak adjustable sight for one of my Sphinx's and it was too loose for my comfort so I didn't install it. I over ground on a sight once and it wasn't snug enough and it kept coming loose. A little peening took care of it.
-

I too have a problem getting a good sight picture with the Sphinx rear sight letting too much light around them. Do you use a six O'clock hold?
-
Danno, thanks for the update man. I'll be giving this a try also. Thanks again
-
I spoke with and ordered two of their front F.O. THey are expecting to package them this Monday, Tuesday and ship after that. You can back order on their site and may ship from this latest batch.
Chris
-
Has anyone replaced the front sight? How hard is it to remove the screw that holds it in? Any help is appreciated.
-
On both my Sub Compact and Compact, use a 1.5mm allen key. On both, they backed out easily and the sight slid forward out of the frame. ZRTac has sent out their F.O.,s on Wednesday so I hope to shoot them this weekend.

My ZRtactical front sight arrived in the mail yesterday so now I'm on a mission to get the rear sights replaced. Danno would you mind telling me if the "Low Mount" sights are the ones you ordered (or someone else if they've successfully installed them)?
Here's a link to the specific ones I'm asking about:

If I'm not mistaken, the lo-mount requires milling the top of the slide.

Nice!! How was the installation? Did you have to fit it a lot? What is the diameter of the FO? Please let us know about the POI with the factory rear. Hope they have corrected the reported low POI with the factory sight set up.
Cheers

-
Thanks!! I just wanted to confirm before I ordered it.

Here's mine with the 10-8 rear and ZRT fiber optic front. The rear was very loose so I hope some loctite in the dovetail + the set screw is enough to hold it.

Thanks for the pics!! How difficult was it for you to remove the factory front sight? I couldn't get mine off for the life of me, and I don't like beating on stuff unnecessarily. That, and I don't want to mess up the slide on this gun.

POI = POA?
Also what we're you shooting 115gr, 124gr or 147gr?
Thx

Update on POA?
-
Didn't get a chance to go to the range yet.
-
Just replaced the stock rear SDP compact sight with the 10-8 Novak sight and went to the range. Dead center on! It shot POA/POI. It fit a little on the loose side but just a bit of peening and it was just perfect. At 10yrds shooting freehand it put all 6 rounds in a 3" bullseye. No more 4-6 low!!! Well worth the $55 dollars.

Mine practically popped out on its own when I took out the set screw. I've done quite a few sight changes on my handguns and usually I need to put the slide in a padded vice and use a hammer and punch to get them out. Start with a nylon punch and if that doesn't work try aluminum > brass > steel (ordered based on how likely you will damage the sight / finish ).

This was my experience as well (though I also changed front sights.) It was shooting a little low but now shoots POA. I've only shot 124gr ammo through it but I still need to try my 147gr carry ammo...

HAs anyone who installing the Novak and or the ZRT Front sight . Dimpled either one
-
I installed the rear 10-8 sight and it fit slightly loose. Just a slight peening of the dovetail was needed.

Did you peen the sight dovetail or the frame dovetail?
-
Frame dovetail, didn't take much. Just do a little at a time.
-
Frame dovetail, didn't take much. Just do a little at a time.
I took a starter punch and made two small dimples on the sight dovetail. I thought about the frame , but decided there might come a time when different sights are available. My Frame already had been peened by the factory
-
so its the low profile sight from 10-8 right? That's the only sight I see

Yep the 10/8 sight linked in an earlier post is all there is right now. That and the ZRTS front FO sight :
-
You can use any Novak 1911 sight. I just like the 10-8
-
I am looking around to install an optical sight (red dot). My eyes are getting old and I need something totally different.

Mill the slide, or try a Novak mount for a red dot

Awesome! Thanks for taking the time!. Would it be possible to measure the height from the bottom of the dovetail for comparison? I see a small gap under the factory sight. If the gap differed between the two by design, that would change the equation.
Thanks for the advice Dannoman! I've had the same problem with my Sphinx SDP Subcompact Alpha and happen to have a set of 10-8 sights for a Glock 23 available. My gunsmith conducted the transplant and tomorrow I hope to try out the combination. Like you said, the match seems perfect!

ETA: It works!!! :) I tried out the new sight combination yesterday at 15 yards and here's the result. My first shots were fired using a 6:00 hold on bottom of the (new) diamond target. Seeing that my rounds (147 grain Federal HST standard pressure loads) were impacting at Point of Aim, I lined up the tops of my front and rear sights on the center of the diamond. I can't express how relieved I am to have FINALLY found a working solution to the low impact issue.

http://tooltechgunsight.com/product/sphinx-sdp/

Thanks danno_man. I have a rear tritium that will work. Do you know whether they will sell a front only for self installation? I did send a message asking if they would sell me a front sight.
-
They usually install into the existing sight.
-
Got you, thanks. Have you or anyone you know ever used them?
-
Nope, just know they are always recommended for tritium.
-
I read the Kriss Facebook, it states XS dots will have Sphinx sight in Q2. Does anyone have experience with XS dot sight before?

toolteckgunsight is making me a new front sight. It will take several months. I just look at it like having a sparks holster on order. (BTW, I just received a VM 2 for my P 01. Beautiful holster, as expected from sparks). have a novak tritium rear among my spare sights that should work. If it doesn't its easy enough to buy novak sights. I have to say, based on past experience its kind of hard to believe that Kriss will meet self projected deadlines.

is there any issue if I just use stock rear sight + ZRT F.O sight?

That setup would make the Gun shoot even lower. You could do the reverse with a taller rear sight But not the otherway around. *If you remove rear sight make sure to go left to right to remove it.* It's a bugger

thank you for the tips. It looks like I have to place an order on rear sight as well. do we buy the .325" tall and .140" notch 1911 low mount sight ?
In addition , how to peen the sight to make sure it sits better on the slide ? Any photo will help.

All you have to do is put the rear sight on a towel upside down. Take a small punch and tap a hole approximately 1/4 of the way in and in the middle from both ends. All you are doing to spreading out the material. Just experiment : You really can't over do it. Remember Left to right out and Right to left install. The sizes are correct : Some guys say loctite : IMO not needed on rear :
To find a video just go to U-tube and search Rear sight dimple or dimpling. It doesn't matter what Gun is shown Just look at technique

Call cajun because they used to sell other springs. Here's one https://cajungunworks.com/product/rp-trs-reduced-power-trigger-return-
spring/ I wold call them and ask. I know they still have the springs because they are Springs that work in the 75 series CZ's. If you watch the CZ videos you can use those to do your SPHINX. *I polished mine as well* Made a Huge difference Here read this as wellhttp://www.czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=63874.0

Which location is the right one to use center punch? I peen the bottom of the sight, but I feel like this maybe the wrong location because the sight won't sit on top of the slide. Shall I peen at location #1 front and back?

The #2 position if anything. You may be just fine with screwing it down in place. Then go shoot it. If he stays put I'd leave it that way first . Put a few 100 round through it If it continues to stay put . Take it out and you'll see where the screw made a slight indentation . Put a dimple there if you'd like, But more importantly put locktite in the hole and in the dovetail . Tighten down that screw and you're done.
We have a tendency to forgot what we did ,when not doing it daily. Or for a living. After looking at yours I remember that's what I did with mine.ALl that dimpling isn't needed. But if you decided you want to : #2
Also Your original rear like everything else on the Sphinx is a bear to get out . Maintain Left to Right out .
After refreshing my Memory looking at yours . I didn't even bother dimpling . I have yet to have any issues

Sorry I keep doing that don't I? I meant right to left. If you could get access to a sight pusher use it. The rear sight probably won't survive removal. At least not cosmetically . Not on a SHpinx

here is my test on original sight. The bottom group is shot with I aim at center of the front sight dot. The top group is shot with aiming at the bottom of the front sight dot. It looks like I need to start my sight replacement now .

I just installed the front ZRT sight and rear 10-8 sight. I am surprised that the rear sight has no gap like other people posted previously.

You have a gap. It's not that others had a different gap. It's that they complained :) Mine looks just as yours does Glad it worked out

I don't see any for the Sphinx on that page. The way you said it is making me wonder if Novak sites are universal and i can use any of them as long as i go through the trouble of finding the correct height front sight. is that the case?
Shooting low seems common with this pistol. Mine hit low as well. 2~3" with the 115 gr bullet and almost on target with the 147 gr bullet at 10yards.
I recall someone was recommending one of these Novak low mount sights but removing the rear sight sounded light a PITA.

Can someone measure the width of the ZRTS Fiber front sight? I didn't see it listed anywhere.

They shoot really low. The front sight is even taller than factory and the rear is approximately the same height as the factory.
