Okay, so I picked this up yesterday and shot it right after. The sku is 999111 and the box says EA9B as the model.
First off, shoots great. Shoots pretty much to point of aim, maybe a tad low, but that could be me. The picture of the target below can attest to that. All shots were at 7 yards and this was probably 3 or 4 magazines worth. I didn't do any lengthy shooting I just wanted to check for function. I did shoot three different brands. Some cheap PPU JHP, tulammo steel cased, and some cheap american eagle range ammo. All fired with no issues. That PPU put a fireball out in front that I could see very well each shot, lol.
The neat thing about this gun is that A) it is "blued" instead of a wonder finish (as most of their new production steel frames seem to be), and B) it is a small frame witness. Most witnesses EAA imports are large frame, so when I came upon this one on Budsgunshop I was intrigued (thinking it was a small frame by the description on their website) and emailed EAA. Their response was that it was indeed a small frame and had been a special run for one of their US distributors. It is indeed a small frame as I was told by EAA. Mecgar CZ75b 17 rounders worked it in perfectly. As can be seen in the pic it has an accessory rail on it, which I was kind of hoping it wouldn't, but oh well. The date code box is CP, which by my reckoning would be this year. The FAB92 I discussed in another thread also has CP in the date code.
The finish on it is, eh, ok. It's applied well and seems durable, but it's just a flat black finish, nothing fancy. I don't mind it, but I do prefer a glossy blued finish or even their Wonderfinish. Anyway, I like the gun. The cost on it was right at 420 after tax so I think it's a pretty fair deal. For anyone who wants a small frame steel witness, new, like I did, this is the gun.

Yea, That's pretty awesome.

Very Sweet deal!!! 8) Congratulations on getting a new small frame Witness!!! 8) :)
Good Shooting, too! 8) That's a keeper, for sure. :)
A couple of years ago, I went with a couple of the Armscor Production Tanfoglio Pistols, just because I wanted newer Small Frame Tanfoglio Pistols.
While they had their issues, I was able to fix those, and get past them. The Finish on the Armscor Tanfoglio Pistols is a Black Parkerize.
Hopefully, EAA will keep these EA9's coming in! :)
-
Sweet!
-
i agree I hope EAA keeps bringing in the small frame 9s. I bought this with not really knowing what to expect. The buds description just said blued and didn't have a picture. I was hoping for more of a blued finish, but the black isn't bad, I'm not an expert, but I'd say it's a black parkerize job like you described on the Armscors JWC.
It's for sure a keeper. Next time I have it out I'm going to try it with my 22 and 40 conversions that work very well on my PS. Curious to see how they work on the steel frame.

Yeah, other than the ambi safety, it looks pretty much just like the full size map1.

Can someone brief me on "small frame" designation? I hope to get a Witness one day and I think I would like it to be the size / form of a CZ 75. Thanks!
-
Mike, the small vs large frame mainly has to do with the front to rear distance inside the magazine well. Large frames have enough room to accept magazines for longer cartridges such as 45ACP, 10mm and 38Super. Small frames only have enough room to accept magazines for shorter cartridges such as 9mm and 40S&W. As you'd probably imagine, the distance from the back of the grip to the trigger is greater for a large frame, so the grip size feels larger. Now here's where some confusion comes in. 9mm and 40S&W can be used in large frames provided special magazines are used which have spacer inserts to make up for the shorter overall lengths of these cartridges. CZ75's are all small frames. A CZ97 (their 45ACP) has a large frame. Witness (Tanfoglio in Italy) now mostly manufacturers large frame pistols for sale in the US. If you buy a large framed Witness, then you can actually get a kit from EAA to chamber it for another cartridge. The kit would include the complete slide assembly and a magazine. If you want to think about it in terms of another pistol, most all 1911 pistols have large frames. The exception I can think of is the Springfield EMP. If you have small hands, then you'd probably prefer a small frame pistol. Otherwise, a small or large frame pistol will do. Hope this helps and don't hesitate to ask more questions if you need to do so.

Bret pretty much nailed it. Tanfogilio makes many models that are small frame, it's just that in 2005 EAA decided to stop importing the small frame and only import the large frame. This move was to make the conversions simpler since the small frame slides won't function on the large frame guns and vice versa. Prior to 2005 EAA imported the 9mm and .40 as small frame and .45, 10mm, and 38 super in the large frame. As Bret pointed out the grip is a little larger for the large frame so some prefer the small frame.
I assume sales must have slacked off pretty quick because EAA then started importing the small frame as the "classic" and then later for the polymer lovers, the PS, or Poly Special, that is small frame. Now it appears they are bringing in the FAB92, which is small frame, and this all steel one the EA9b, which is also small frame.
As for the conversions, it appears EAA doesn't much care about those who like them any longer. A couple years ago the prices of the conversion kits (slide/barrel assembly and magazine) skyrocketed in price. I remember they used to sell for 200 -250, now it pretty much costs the price of a new gun to get one of their conversion kits.
I hadn't heard of inserts being used for the 9mm magazines in large frames. I just use the 9mm magazines that they sell for the large frames. Which interestingly is an easy way to tell if you're looking at a large or small frame 9mm or .40 witness. The large frame mags are easily identifiable. See pic below. The large frame 9mm mag is on the left, small frame 9mm on right.

FYI- Prior to 2005, 9mm and .40 Witnesses shipped, were made with the small frame and were compatible with Cz75B Magazines.
In 2005, EAA decided to only import Large Frame 9mm and .40 Pistols, to reduce the stock needed for Caliber Conversion kits.
Small Frame 9mm's and to a lesser extent, .40's, continued to be made and marketed for the rest of the world.
EAA also decided to go with Sabatti as a Magazine supplier, instead of Mec-Gar, and Quality and Feeding issues ensued.
Sabatti could not fix the Large Frame 9mm Magazine Issues and MecGar was called in to make a Magazine that would work.
MercGar came up with an Anti-tilt Magazine Follower and feed reliability was then fixed.
IMO, The whole bruhaha could have been avoided by simply coming up with a spacer for the rear of the Large Frame Magazine Well and the original 9mm/.40 Magazines would have worked.
Occasionally, EAA would import small batches of "Witness Classics" which were small framed, to satisfy demand from some distributors and design purists, such as myself, who prefer the reliability of the original small frame design. Hence, my purchases of my Armscor MAP1 series Pistols, which are Tanfoglio Small Frame Pistols.

Yummy! Thanks a lot Ya'll for the tutorial. I get it now.

I wasn't clear enough. The inserts I was talking about are inside the large frame magazines. They are not inside the magazine wells to allow for use of small frame magazines in large frames.

Oh, I see. That makes sense. Maybe those were the mags JWC was referring to that Sabatti made prior to Mecgar?
-
Maybe those were the mags JWC was referring to that Sabatti made prior to Mecgar?
No! The only direct Frame insert made that I know of was made by myself for a local IPSC shooter with a large frame stock II, and was glued to the backside of the Magazine Well.
Not sure it would pass review for manufacture or service, but it worked when there were no other alternatives at the time to those Sabatti Magazines.
While the owner no longer competes, as far as I know, the Pistol still works.

Cool, learn something new everyday. So the insert allowed the use of the small frame magazines in the large frame? This could be of interest for someone who likes the large frames but has a lot of CZ75b mags.
-

Yes. Back then all we had were the typical Tanfoglio and Cz75B 16 rounders. Pearce Grip Magazine +2 Extensions were added for an overall 18 +1 capacity to stay competitive in Limited Hi-Cap Minor Class. The insert was milled from 4140 Stock, heat treated, and finish machined, back when I had access to a Machine Shop.

I just bought a 999111 SKU EAA witness for $335 shipped should be here in a few days. Hope mine is a small frame like these.

Well if you end up with a large frame, you actually got a better deal because they go for more. I still prefer the small frame though. Post pictures when you get it.

thanks for a clear explanation I have both .40 classic and 10mm large frame both are excellent shooters

Excellent and informative post. I see As of Feb 2017 Buds still has this EA9 small frame 999111 in stock and just $355. I'm tempted to grab one but I have a ton of 9's already. I paid about that much for my 1994 EA9 small frame Compact that I found in a gun shop in pristine condition last year. I adore that pistol! I've since bought a new Elite Match in .45 and I am extremely with it as well, though you can really feel the increased grip size. Question for the experts here: I've seen a couple examples of the compact (pre-2005, serial numbers begin with AE like mine) in .45 ACP. Are these also small frame models? They look identical to my EA9 Compact. I really want one but assumed it was also a small frame. Can anyone here confirm?

All 45 witnesses are considered large frame, no matter the physical size of the gun (full size, compact, etc). This is true also for the 10mm and 38 super witnesses. The pre-2005 witnesses that were small frame were the 9mm and .40 caliber models.
As to the current EA9b, if you prefer the small frame all steel, you should pick one up while they are cheap and available. EAA's importing of the small frame steel witness always seems to be limited.

+1
The reason that 45ACP, 10mm and 38Super require large frames is that their cartridge lengths won't fit inside the pistol grip of a small framed pistol. In addition to 9mm and 40S&W, 357Sig is also a small frame cartridge.

This has probably been asked but will CZ 75 grips fit on these full size EA9's? My small frame compact won't take CZ compact grips. Shorter frame. The full size looks close to CZ though.

In general, Cz75 Grips will fit Full Size Small Frame 9mm and .40 Tanfoglio Pistols. Cz75 Grips will also fit the Full Size Canik/TriStar Pistols as well.

Anyone have a pic of CZ aluminum or G10 grips on a small frame Witness? Hogue rubber grips will fit anything with enough persuasion. :-)

I don't have any aluminum or g10 grips to try, but the plastic grips from my 85b (which takes the same as the 75) fit perfect on my ea9b.

Ordered mine from Bud's today. Can't pass this up for $355 shipped.

Now if they would just ship the darned thing. Four days later and no shipping yet..
-
That's Bud's for ya'. MrGunDealer is no better. Grabagun is quick to ship.

Ya. I don't care to buy from Buds but the price was good, my FFL is on file with them, etc. Finally shipped this morning.

Good thread, I'm tempted to pick one of these up for just a little over 300 and some change
Pretty much just a CZ 75 B clone?

It's a tanfoglio so it isn't a true clone in regards to parts interchanging, but it will take CZ75b magazines and grips. You won't regret grabbing one, I really like mine.
-
My LGS can get them for 350. Same price as gunbuyer with the FFL transfer fee.
I'm thinking this may be a good buy at that price point

A very good clone at those mid$-300 prices. Feels chunkier and a less refined build than a CZ 75B. The muzzle has sharp, flat edges/face and there was a small rough cut on one side of the barrel feed ramp near the top (doesn't affect feeding with S&B round nose). Luckily, Hogue G-10 grips can replace the thin plastic stock grips....just have to watch the mag release clearance. Had to try the CZUB Retro alum...they feel good for me and do dress up a plain Jane nicely.
Front sight is an integral part of slide so any changes require smithing at a cost. A bit wide for precision shooting but can get you into the ring at 25 yards. Shorter reset than a stock CZ trigger. Looking to put in a lighter mainspring next. I got mine two weeks ago. Put in a 13lb Wolff hammer spring and a 18lb trigger bar plunger spring, CGW trigger return spring, and polished everything. My sear/hammer engagement was very rough and gritty and took a good deal of polishing to smooth out. I typically don't mess with sear and hammer hook surfaces but this one was pretty bad. All good now. Smooth as glass. A fraction of the camming a stock CZ has. Tanfos have a much better hammer cut and Reset out of the box. Very easy to bring up to speed. 3lb 9oz SA pull after the springs and tuning. My biggest disappointment is it hits an inch+ low at 15 yards. I believe the adjustable LPA rear sight from the Elite Match will work so I'm going to find one and bring the POI up. If I really fall in love with the pistol I'll have the front sight cut down and milled for a fiber optic. Right now the pistol is good but not exceptional. I'm also getting an occasional light strike with the 13lb mainspring. This is not an issue in my two other Tanfos that are running the same spring. Maybe it needs some more break in. I initially had a few FTE issues where the extractor was not pulling the spend round out of the chamber. A good soaking with oil cured that. Definitely worth what I paid but not up to par with my 1994 EA9L compact as far as overall quality.
-
I also have a nice set of original TA90 wood grips coming that I found on eBay. I look forward to doing something interesting with them for this pistol. I also scored a NOS set of the old style rubber grips. The cheap plastic ones it came with have to go. They really don't look bad but they just scream cheap..

Excellent video. Thanks! I recently bought one as well. I'm surprised at your trigger pull measurements. You may want to try it again while holding the pistol firmly against the table and pulling on a plane parallel with the slide. Out of the box my DA was 10+ and my SA was about 5.5. I've since polished the internals, installed a Wolff 13lb hammer spring, 18lb plunger spring, and a CGW reduced power trigger return spring. DA is now right at 8lbs and SA is 3.5lbs. My only disappointment is it shoots an inch low at 15 yards. Not huge but I prefer a six o clock hold. I found a new LPA two dot adjustable sight that looks exactly like the stock one and installed it the other night. Now I'll be able to bring the POI up to match my other pistols.

Yeah, I was having a time doing the trigger pulls with how I was trying to hold it in frame with the camera. I may try some more to see if I can get more accurate results. What was the part number on that lpa sight you got?
-
Having done a few YouTube videos myself with an iPhone in one hand and a pistol in the other, I can totally relate.
I bought my sight on eBay, new in box but second hand. The exact part number wasn't checked on the package where they are supposed to check mark it. I can tell you it is the LPA SPR series and looks identical to the stock sight other than the adjustability. elevation and windage) I did have to shim it as it was a pretty loose fit. Correct sight and cut I'm sure, but loose in my dovetail.

I may have to look for some of those. I like having some adjustability to offset my terrible pistol handling, lol.

Referring to the video posted.
Ability to engage safety on Tanfoglio with hammer down is minor design nuisance, more of a fitting issue.
Racking the slide with hammer down and safety on may damage the sear. When hammer is cocked by slide, the sear is raised a little bit - probably depends on the hammer hooks profile. Sear leg is pushed onto safety. It just happens that the model / particular gun you have allows that. I have 4 Tanfoglio-s - both large and small frame, none is happy to cock the hammer with safety on.
CZ mags won't work for lefties who have reversed mag catch. The notches on CZ mags have different offset from the mag top. Even better, old mags or ProMag's, or 26-round CZUB mag may not have a notch for lefties at all.
-
I consider the safety on with hammer down a design feature and not a nuisance. And who wouldn't like to be able to rack the slide and chamber a round with the safety on the whole time?? I see no evidence that it causes problems with the sear. Tanfoglio, SAR, and Jericho all use this sear cage design. It's superior to the CZ design IMHO. The firing in block works with the trigger pull instead of against it, and the overall design is simpler with less moving parts.
-
Well, I'm reporting what I see. Stock II and 2x Stock III small frame, Limited Custom large frame - it's not possible to cock the hammer with safety on.
Pretty sure I can fit CZ sear to safety, or both to each other so it would engage in hammer down yet would be functional. It may not be a very tight fit, and not for all types of hammers. Didn't see obvious reason why not.
Just a datapoint: racking the slide with safety on have no meaningful functionality for me. YMMV
-
Maybe there was some confusion. You can't cock the hammer with the safety on. But you can have the hammer cocked, safety on, and still rack the slide to chamber a round, press check, etc. You can't do that on a CZ.
-
Indeed, I was confused. Around 11min of darink's video the slide is cycled with hammer already cocked, missed that.
-
Is there an extended slide release for this model or a CZ version that will work?

Totally different mag release mechanism than CZ so no on that one. I don't know if an extended one from one of the Tanfo competition models would work or not. They have a larger frame.

Oops. You said slide, not mag. Sorry about that.

Ok. I grabbed my SP-01 which as the extended slide release and popped it in the EA9B. It fit and functions. Interestingly, the extended CZ slide release lever is maybe only 1/8" longer than the stock Tanfo lever. Any gains would be negligible.

CZ75 rubber grips are installed on mine now. Not a perfect fit around the edges but better than the hard plastic ones that came with it by a long shot. I wish we could get factory rubber grips for these.
Also, the Fobus SG21 paddle holster will work for this pistol. It's ever so close to being a perfect fit.

Mr. HH, those look great. Thanks a lot, now you got me thinking of doing the same thing!! lol
-
Okay, so I picked this up yesterday and shot it right after. The sku is 999111 and the box says EA9B as the model.
I am planning on ordering one of these while they are still cheap. I have a question though, has Tanfoglio changed the hardening process on the sear yet? I mean, will I be able to do a trigger job/polish without fearing about losing the hardness of the sear? I heard they used to only surface harden these parts.
-
Well the video got me wanting one. I have the small frame P-S and think it's the best gun for the money to be had right now. When I started looking only Bud's had any and only for Bud's Team Members. I wasn't about to pay them $40 just for the privilege of buying a gun from them. I checked Classic Firearms and they were out of stock so I asked to be notified if they got any in.
Wednesday morning I got an email from them and ordered one for $319.99 shipped. I came in at my local FFL this afternoon, super fast. I cleaned it up and will take it out early Saturday morning.

Sweet Deal, Oreocat! 8) Congratulations and enjoy it! :)

I did the first 100 rounds early this morning and as a first outing I think I shoot this pistol as well if not better than anything I have. I have 38 other hand guns and for me I would put this one up against my Beretta M9 and APX, also my CZ75 BD. I'm really liking this one.

Congrats on the purchase oreocat, 320 is the cheapest I've seen these. sounds like you're shooting good with it too!
