Maybe those were the mags JWC was referring to that Sabatti made prior to Mecgar?

No!  The only direct Frame insert made that I know of was made by myself for a local IPSC shooter with a large frame stock II, and was glued to the backside of the Magazine Well.
Not sure it would pass review for manufacture or service, but it worked when there were no other alternatives at the time to those Sabatti Magazines.
While the owner no longer competes, as far as I know, the Pistol still works.

Cool, learn something new everyday.  So the insert allowed the use of the small frame magazines in the large frame?  This could be of interest for someone who likes the large frames but has a lot of CZ75b mags.

Yes.  Back then all we had were the typical Tanfoglio and Cz75B 16 rounders. Pearce Grip Magazine +2 Extensions were added for an overall 18 +1 capacity to stay competitive in Limited Hi-Cap Minor Class.  The insert was milled from 4140 Stock, heat treated, and finish machined, back when I had access to a Machine Shop.

Well if you end up with a large frame, you actually got a better deal because they go for more.  I still prefer the small frame though.  Post pictures when you get it.

Excellent and informative post. I see As of Feb 2017 Buds still has this EA9 small frame 999111 in stock and just $355. I'm tempted to grab one but I have a ton of 9's already. I paid about that much for my 1994 EA9 small frame Compact that I found in a gun shop in pristine condition last year. I adore that pistol! I've since bought a new Elite Match in .45 and I am extremely with it as well, though you can really feel the increased grip size. Question for the experts here: I've seen a couple examples of the compact (pre-2005, serial numbers begin with AE like mine) in .45 ACP. Are these also small frame models? They look identical to my EA9 Compact. I really want one but assumed it was also a small frame. Can anyone here confirm?

All 45 witnesses are considered large frame, no matter the physical size of the gun (full size, compact, etc).  This is true also for the 10mm and 38 super witnesses.  The pre-2005 witnesses that were small frame were the 9mm and .40 caliber models.

As to the current EA9b, if you prefer the small frame all steel, you should pick one up while they are cheap and available.  EAA's importing of the small frame steel witness always seems to be limited.

The reason that 45ACP, 10mm and 38Super require large frames is that their cartridge lengths won't fit inside the pistol grip of a small framed pistol.  In addition to 9mm and 40S&W, 357Sig is also a small frame cartridge.

This has probably been asked but will CZ 75 grips fit on these full size EA9's? My small frame compact won't take CZ compact grips. Shorter frame. The full size looks close to CZ though.

In general, Cz75 Grips will fit Full Size Small Frame 9mm and .40 Tanfoglio Pistols.  Cz75 Grips will also fit the Full Size Canik/TriStar Pistols as well.

Anyone have a pic of CZ aluminum or G10 grips on a small frame Witness? Hogue rubber grips will fit anything with enough persuasion. :-)
