Title: Upgrades and when are they taken too far?
Post by: DangerousDad007 on February 24, 2018, 01:44:26 PM
I have always been a big proponent of practice and knowledge makes perfect. When it comes to guns I do think that a CC(or any shooter) should be able to shoot proficiently with any handgun while it is factory stock condition, However I?m completely on board and understanding, that if you can do something that will increase a skill that is already good to make it great is nothing to shy away from. But my question is at what point does adding practical upgrades turn into changing the gun all together and become unnecessary.

For example my cz p-10c is by far my favorite pistol, rivals my Walther ppq?s trigger, ergonomic as my p-01, and after about 7,000 rounds not a single hiccup. Believe it or not I actually wish the texture was more aggressive all the way around the grip, leads me to want stippling to make my favorite gun better, HBI makes a flat theta trigger wich makes the travel less(do not want to change any internal springs) and a great trigger could become even better, lastly trijicon rmr06 has always proven to be durable, reliable, and assist with quick accurate shots for me.

All are practical simple upgrades, but all together that?s a new trigger, different grip and texture and now, new sights and RMR added. Am I altering my favorite pistol to assist me as a concealed carrier, and defensive shooter, or now changing the firearm all together making it no longer the p-10 I?ve come to love.

Only you can decide.

My priorities with upgrades are reliability first and then performance and comfort.

I have upgraded my P-07s with CGW prograde kits, X300U-Bs, RM07s and Primary Machine comps. All gains as far as my experience with them has shown.

Can I still shoot well with a stock gun? Sure ... but any advantage that costs me nothing more than a little time and money is well worth it IMO.

My upgrades to my P-10 include a HBI flat trigger with a 3 pounds striker spring on my CGW tool steel striker and a Gray Guns super black stainless steel guide rod with a 15 pound recoil spring. The net result is a smooth trigger with an average pull of 3 pounds 14 ounces reduced uptake and short reset. I definitely don't think that I have gone too far with these upgrades but then its always a matter of personal choice.

There?s no such thing as ?too much? or ?unnecessary? as it?s all in what the owner deems that to be. Not speaking to anyone in here directly, but far too many people in our community seem to worry too much about why and what other people are doing with their guns. Not everyone cares about training, carrying, etc as some people are only into guns for a purely hobby stand point. And there?s absolutely nothing wrong with that. We do still live in a free country (for now at least) where you can do just that. They?re not worried about attending a pistol class 3 or 4 times a year.

I know I went on a rant there but the negativity in our community over what people do with their own guns and hard earned money is just insane. As firearm owners we?ve got enough crap to worry about from outside our community. No reason to be attaching one another within about dumb things like how ?stupid? it is to have a punisher skull on your gun.

If you like your P10 the way it is, leave it. The trigger in mine isn't good. I won't wait and see if I will "come to love" a gun. I mod it until it's what I want. On a side note, how does the HBI trigger shorten reset? Are there additional parts that come with it?

This is a topic that keeps gun forums alive and well  :D

When it comes to guns I do think that a CC(or any shooter) should be able to shoot proficiently with any handgun
How about we really open the can of worms and define exactly what this means? ;D

Am I altering my favorite pistol to assist me as a concealed carrier, and defensive shooter, or now changing the firearm all together

Everyone probably has their own opinion on exactly where that line would fall, but really your the only one that can decide. And pretty much the only one it will matter to.

Not sure that the HBI trigger shortens reset but it dose come with a 3.5 pound and a 3 pound striker spring.

I get what you're saying but like RB said, for many it's a hobby.  Some people feed money to a truck or car like it's on life support only to never really truly test the mods they've spent their hard earned money on.

Some of us buy another gun.  I can see where someone might have $1,000 in a $500 gun but I don't really see how that's much different than going out and buying another 9mm the next year.

Heck, I have five CZ 9mms.  I could have saved a lot of money by buying just two and upgrading to my heart's content.

Not blasting here but to each their own.  We don't all reason the same, which is what makes us great on the whole.

Individual preferences rule here. I do sights and extra mags and that is about it.
Just my preference.

I agree with many of the sentiments posted here. Customization is a personal decision, often for personal reasons and tastes.  The only one needing to be happy with the customization is the one paying for it. No one else has a dog in that hunt.

Now, if customizing for resale- that?s another topic

Indeed.  But it's my belief that the resale payback on customization is rarely realized.

That has certainly been my experience...

I've never seen upgrades payback in resale, cars, guns, put 1000 in get 500 back, if your lucky

I'm a fan of tinkering, anything that I proves the gun and is free gets done quickly, parts take some thought and a lot of back and fourth, Cgw pro kit and other parts have been in the cart 3 or 4 times so far in the 3 months I've had the gun.

I make changes to my guns to improve how they shoot for me. This includes any mod to any part of a gun. If I want to improve how a pistol feels in my hand I do what I can to affect that. To me this is of the utmost importance. I refuse to risk reliability or safety however. I realize the mods I make are for ME. If I choose to sell I understand I may lose all the money I put into the gun. But as long as I had it the gun was the way I wanted it. BTW, I leave some guns pretty much stock as I don't feel I need to make changes.

With the exception of sights, I run my EDC pistols stock, or very close to it..I'm not carrying a CZ at the moment, but rather a Beretta PX4CC. All I've done to it was change the mag release button to the "large" button, and swap out the hammer spring to a 12lb Wilson Combat hammer spring, this gives me about a 8lb DA trigger pull with about a 4lb SA trigger pull. On the G19 I carried before this, the only things that were changed were the sights, and I installed a Apex extractor, other than that, it was bone stock. All too often people will start making changes in a effort to buy skill, when really all that is needed is practice, practice, and more practice. Usually I don't make changes to pistols until I get at least 1000 rnds through it, by that time, you'll have a good idea of what you'd like to change, and why.

I'm one of those who believe in nothing ventured nothing gained so I don't wait for several thousand rounds before I upgrade my handguns. I simply research the upgrade options for my handguns and select the ones that I feel are best for my shooting skills paying close attention to what effect the upgrades I choose will have on the reliability of my firearms. 100% reliability is a must for me so I test my enhanced handguns thoroughly before adding them to my everyday carry rotation. Others may disagree with my preferences and I totally understand and respect that.  Gun owners are a diverse group of individuals with lots of different views.

I totally agree.  I do it for "ME".  BTW, I never sell a gun I have tinkered with.  Pretty much like throwing money away.

What is a " soke upgrade"? and how much does it cost?

Historically, I have a few packages of Sugru, fresh JB-Weld, clean files and wheels for the Dremel, and a box of CGW parts in hand before I order a new pistol.  I typically destroy 2/3 of the value of the pistol to anyone else within a week.  I triple the value to ME within a week.  I've shot and won a bullseye match with a heavily modified polymer pistol purchased at Academy Sports within the first few months of ownership.  I'm not selling any pistols, and I'm not holding back if and when I need to change something to make it right for me.

You guys wouldn't believe the YouTube comments I have gotten over the years about me modifying my own pistols.  Why my pistol is sacred to someone else is beyond me.

I agree totally.  I like to make it "mine".
