Title: P-07 firing pin roll pin replacement?
Post by: uncle_malice on March 03, 2018, 03:07:00 PM
Hi all,

New to the forum. I just picked up my brand new P-07 on Thursday afternoon. I haven't put the first round through it, just a little bit of dry firing at home to get a feel for the trigger. Today, I noticed that the firing pin seemed to be staying inside of the slide and not coming back out. I tried poking at it and moving the plunger, but it seemed stuck.

So, I grabbed my punch kit and popped out the roll pin to discover that there is a crescent shaped chunk broken out of the roll pin. The firing pin came out along with a couple of little bits of shrapnel that had broken off of the roll pin. The firing pin itself looks to be in good shape, but I'm a little concerned at the roll pin breaking so quickly... however, given the short life of it, I'm guessing maybe there was a heat treating issue and it was just too brittle or something.

Is this a roll pin that I can get at Ace Hardware or similar? Or is it something that I need to specially order from CZ-USA?? Is this a known issue on the P-07? I've been super excited to get into this excellent combat gun, but parts breaking before round 1 seems odd.

Thanks for any help!

UPDATE: found this post. The photo of his roll pin looks exactly like mine.

I'm guessing dry firing on a P-07 is frowned upon? Though he claims on there that CZ tested dry firing them 30k times without issue. I certainly haven't done that. Maybe a couple hundred at most.

You need to replace the stock pin with the Cajun Gun Works one. The CGW pin is much more robust.

The CGW kit comes with a better roll pin? Good to know. I knew about the extended firing pin. I actually have the complete pro kit or whatever it's called ($225) being delivered on Monday.

I should have no problems with dry firing after the CGW kit, then?

You shouldn?t, but it?s still recommended using snap caps or as most of us prefer? an O ring. #83 IIRC. Really helps cushion the FP.

Not my pic. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180303/cfedacdef5d0037cdcf4582597a745d7.jpg)

Oh nice. The O-ring idea is cool. I'll try to pick one up.

We're all squared away for the time being, at least. Ran over to Ace hardware and found a nice, heavier gauge, US-made roll pin for 47-cents. Put the slide back together and it seems to be all good.

I would have just waited until Monday when the CGW kit gets here, but I'm actually going out to the desert to shoot some steel with a friend and wanted to put the P07 through some rounds before I put the CGW kit in it. Seems good to go for the moment. I'll report back after tomorrow!

Mcmaster-carr has heavy guaged roll pins for a fraction of the cost. Can get a bag of them.

If you dry fire you MUST use the O ring or snap cap. There is no roll pin that won't fall apart in time otherwise.

That is why the CGW FP retaining pin isn?t a roll pin - it is a spring pin...  ;-)

I have dry fired my Cajunized P-07s (without a snap cap or o-ring) thousands of times without issue.

Certainly no harm in using an o-ring or snap cap, of course, but I wouldn?t consider it a necessity with the CGW pin.

Just DON'T forget to take the o-ring out when you're done.  If you need the gun in a defensive situation, it'll go click instead of bang.

I did this while target shooting one day and it was quite a surprise.  It also showed that I had one heck of a flinch.  It was a good lesson.

BTW, just so everyone is also informed - the cajun firing pin comes with lifetime warranty - but ONLY if you use their firing pin spring pin. I found this out just recently after reading on their site. 8)

Just in case you missed it, the opening on the CGW pin must be at the 12 o'clock position when installed.
I use a snap cap anyway. Your choice  :)

I don't dry fire so I have no worries about this issue even though I do have a CGW pin in my P-07. However there is a thread here on this forum where the CGW pin failed from dry firing without protection.  So if you're gonna slam your pin dry you should probably protect it.

O-Ring is what I use and when I talked to David at CGW he recommended them for dry firing the 07/09

Silly question but how do you know what size o ring to get? I have snap caps but like the idea of the o ring. I?ve also never bought them before so this is all new to me.

I use 7.8X1.9 but H ave a whole box of o-rings and different guns use different sizes.

I?m not saying it couldn?t happen... just that it is extremely unlikely if the CGW pin is installed properly.  Thousands of dry fires with mine and I detail strip every 2000 rounds or so for a through cleaning - I?ve seen no evidence of wear.

For me it is just easier to have a spare on hand but I doubt I?ll ever need it. ;-)

The stock pin, on the other hand, is a fragile little snowflake. There have been reports of it failing with less than 5 dry fires  o_O
