Somehow I didn't think this would end well. He does prove a point that its effective on him. Not sure I would want to confront an attacker with a gun given a choice of protection.

The problem is that it takes time to take effect. Ive used it countless times on the street. Everyone reacts differently.
Ive had it in my eyes may times; it hurts but you can still fight.
Its better than nothing but I prefer a gun any day of the week.

Been there also and although it was a test to see how bad it is I am sure even with the pain and fuzzy eyes I would have still been able to get to the victim. Also take the gun over the spray any time. Maybe use bear spray if you're going to rely on it.

Only a liberal demonrat could do such a stupid thing to himself. What if the attacker is in the netherworld on drugs and the pepper spray doesn't work? What if there are multiple attackers? Hey guys hold still while I hose you down with some seasoning!

I use pepper spray professionally, and the brand is actually quite important, as well as delivery method. We used LE Bodygaurd 10 for years, then Sabre Red. SR is seasoning in a can, not effective. Now we use Phantom, and that stuff is pressurized evil, works great. However, very true, it does NOT always affect people the same way, have seen people shrug it off for a short time, far, far longer than it would take to accurately fire a weapon. Also, even a blinded person can still pull a trigger, now sending uncontrolled rounds everywhere in a blind panic, literally. Gas also is an AREA effect weapon - spray this in a classroom and everyone will be gagging and running. In that case the foam makes more sense, but it can be less effective. It is, of course, important to note that a bullet may also have less immediate effect on certain people if not in an area, (central nervous system), that causes immediate system shut down, but I'd rather have a good sidearm in an active shooter classroom situation than a can of gas.

And, if the guy wants to experience being gasses/sprayed, why doesn't he join the US Military and really contribute some effort, sweat, pain. I guarantee he'll understand once he takes that mask off in the CS room/building and has to stand their answering questions before they let him run outside to stumble over those who went before him while the snot runs out of his nose, the tears from his eyes, and the coughing to clear his burning throat/lungs.

That is being overly optimistic. It can be done under controlled conditions but its a stream. So if the bad guy is moving around you end up spraying other cops ( as most rookies do....lol)
I mostly will spray at spitting distance after going hands on. You have to remember, me as a cop, doesn't walk around with it in my hand waiting to spray people. 90% of encounters I have start with hands, and if needed, go to spray or baton.
Its something that pops off then you grab it. There has been rare occasions where we can see the threat coming and take a preemptive action, but that is rare.
I prefer to have my hands free if I have to go to my gun.
Thats why, in the last 10 years or so, these videos pop up of three or four cops tazing a suspect but the guy is just wrestling around. Its because unless you are going deadly force, non deadly force options must go side by side with going hands on.
So I took the long way around in all this.
Short answer; OC is not an option to be used when deadly force is needed. UNLESS there is no other option ( Like being in a non CCW state)

That's why I'm asking. I plan to go camping this summer with my family. And while carry is not prohibited in WA state (and I have concealed carry license) - camp rules prohibit any firearms. So, I'm thinking about taking pepper spray/gun with me. I'm not thinking about possible usage against bad guys, but rather against predators, like cougars, bears? A month ago two mountain bikers were attacked by cougar (mountain lion) and one of them died. These two guys didn't have any weapons with them (even pepper sprays).

My statement still holds true, it's better than nothing. Try to get one with marking dyes. They tend to foam up more and not be as thin and runny. But be mindful of the direction of the wind. At worst, some of it will blow back onto you and you'll be victim to your own deterrent.
A nice long "walking stick" with a point on the end of it may also be helpful.

Range depends on delivery system and wind direction. Nothing like gassing yourself, I can say with experience. Stream goes longest, foam next and cone shortest, BUT if you use something like an MK 9 fogger you pick up another couple of feet due to power. get some actual bear spray, and carry it - it's better than nothing and those exposed mucus membranes on bear and dog noses tend to get fouled quick with pepper spray. Cats won't like it either. Awareness is key - cats hunt from behind.

My wife had pepper spray when we drove to Canada to travel to Niagra Falls. At the border they asked if we had @,#,& OR any pepper spray. I admitted we did. They turned is around and sent us back across the Ambassador Bridge to Michigan. We disposed of the pepper spray and returned. 😕😨
