Today I was letting a buddy of mine use my Dillon xl750 to load a thousand rounds of 38 super. I loaded up 10 primer tubes with CCI small pistol primers while he sorted brass before we had finished the first 400 rounds we had 3 primer tubes with stuck primers. The primers were fresh production bought around Christmas when Scheels had a $59 per 1000 sale. I loaded the primer tubes with my Double Alpha Primafill and everthing felt normal until we started loading them in the press. The only other time I remember having a primer stuck in a primer tube was 3 or 4 years ago and it was also CCI primer. I gave Dillon a call and the tech. said to fill the tubes with cleaning solvent and then just trash the tubes and not to worry they would replace the tubes for free.
We finished my buddy's 38 Super ammo with some of my Fiocchi primers and all went well I'm just a bit antsy using any more CCI primers and he still has about 5000.

I have noticed it helps to rinse the tubes out with a good aerosol to keep things moving as they should. I find it strange that CCI is giving a problem since those are the brand I've had the least issue with. Remington and Federals have given me headaches at times on my XL750.
If Dillon is sending new tubes I'd be curious too see how things go with those.

• The tubes to do better when a cleaning patch soaked in bore cleaner is pushed through them once a year or so.

• Have you measured the primer OD ?? It's not beyond belief that CCI released a batch that's simply too big.

• Try attaching a 45ACP case to the top of the black Dillon primer weight rod. If it helps, you can also place a 40 cal bullet inside. Like this...

If they've gotten to the point where priming compound dust is building up inside the tubes be careful handling them and getting the primers out.  One of the match shooters at work (years ago) had primers get stuck in a tube.  He pulled it out of the loader and smacked in on the edge of the bench and it exploded.  Lost the tip of one finger and pieces of skin from a couple more.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

those CCI are faulty, they need to be destroyed, I have a primer destroying license. Send them to me and I will take care of them for you.

Yeah those need to be disposed of properly.  Do you have the oversize diameter destruction certification?  I do so they better send them to me for disposal.  We need to make sure we follow the regulations here.

Cheers,
Toby

My problem is with primers getting stuck in the Dillon primer pick up tubes not in the XL750's primer magazine. And yes I've been derelict in cleaning my primer pick up tubes so last night i pushed a Q-tip through all 13 of my small primer tubes. And there was a very small amount of greenish residue on the Q-tip after cleaning them. Then I decided to measure several brands of small pistol primers with a micrometer Federal, CCI, Winchester, and Fiocchi were all .175" to .1755" in diameter. The only difference I can see is many of the CCI primers have a very small burr or flashing around the open mouth of the primer. By holding one of the offending CCI primers with a pair of tweezers I got a measurement of .1765 at the burr I then removed the priming system from the press and found many small metal filings. I then examined several of the empty CCI primer trays and I found a few metal filings. I checked a few primers in each of my buddys 5 remaining bricks and they all looked okay. Maybe that one case of primers was made at the end of a shift on a Friday.

I got a hold of some older CCI large pistol primers several years ago that may have had a similar issue.  I hand prime and I spent a lot of time using two thumb to force many of those primers up into the primer pocket.  If I wasn't so cheap I'd have tossed away and bought a different brand.  The 1911's didn't care about how much trouble I had seating those primers and ate them up anyway.

The dd all go bang.

I clean all my pickup tubes and the priming system every 10,000 rounds now and that has kept any priming issues I've incurred to a low minimum. I'd bet there's nothing wrong with those primers.

I've been reloading on progressive machines since 1975 and just thought this was strange. SI VIS PACEM PARABELLUM is absolutely right the primers work fine after the small bits of metal break off the primers and jam up the primer tubes, primer slide and primer seat cup !   I won't be using any more of that batch of primers in any of my progressive machines and my buddy won't have any issues running them in his single stage or turret press.
