Remember when the SHTF there ain't going to be any ammo left at Wally World so you need to stock up or get your reloading press going. Also if you need to leave your home ammo can be pretty heavy

In my situation, a SHTF scenario would most likely consist of urban survival, or at least me fighting to get OUT of an urban area. Therefore my top three choices would be:

1. Ruger Mini-14 (Tactical)
2. Remington 870 (Tactical)
3. CZ-75B in 9mm

The Ruger and Remington would be the simple black tactical versions, without any fancy gizmos or scopes added. Both are short and lite enough to conceivably be carried together. The Rem and CZ together would be well under $1000, as would the Ruger.

Edit:

I overlooked the budget constraint. If limited to $1200 (and ammo is free) I would pick a 1300 shotgun for town issues and a 9422 rifle for killing meat in the woods.
