Forgot to add, I don't know of any other source for new springs. Cope Distributing does have used good condition VZ mag springs for $5 each.

Thanks for the info.  The VZ followers may differ.  I'll try out some more of mine.

Czechpoint sells new mag springs but pricey at $6-8 per one range IIRC.

Thanks for the info.  I did look at them a while back but counting shipping each magazine spring was about 75% the cost of a complete surplus mag so at the time I just bought the surplus mags.  The Copes springs are also an option but I don't really think that it's necessary at this point as even my most beaten up surplus mags with the least perceptible tension when loading rounds will feed the rifle just fine when shooting.  I just thought that at about $4 a piece the AK springs would be a cost effective back up plan.  Didn't work out that way.

I tried again last night with numerous VZ58 followers, all obviously made at different factories and/or time periods.  Some followers would accept the wider AK spring better than others, but none would allow the spring to articulate smoothly on compression.  I guess that in an emergency the followers could be spread a little and that might work, or that twenty loaded rounds would be better than none, but for the time being I'll keep the VZ58 springs in the VZ58 magazines and stash the AK springs for a later time.

You *might* be able to talk someone like Wolff into making some if you did the legwork of getting them samples, etc.  They make a lot of springs for weapons more rare than the VZ58, so might be worth exploring...

Czechpoint gets $6.50 for a VZ mag spring. And they show in stock.

Not bad if that's new compared to Cope's. But yea, unless you can combine an order the shipping makes that as much as a surplus mag.

I spent some more time with my Vz mags w/AK springs, Loaded & unloaded them each six times. I did notice that one of them would stop at 29 rounds, but only did it once.

Once seated in the VZ58 followers, will the first four or five coils of the AK springs travel freely?

I wonder if the AK springs I got are just 0.5 mm wider than the ones you have.  That would be enough to bind.
