First Time Out With My 97BD
« on: September 15, 2016, 06:28:36 PM »
Back in 2009, I bought a new PO-1 which my wife immediately confiscated for her conceal carry which she still carries today.
After firing the gun, she insisted that was the gun for her from all her "research"...lol.
In search for another PO-1, I ended up with 75BD which is a great shooter as well.
I really didn't need/want another compact CC pistol anyway as I had several other brands so the 75BD became a fine range gun that I would use occasionally to rattle off a few 9mm.
To make a long story short, the vendor also had a 97BD with night sights there that day as well....so I bought the 97BD the following week.
The 97 sat in my gun safe, brand new and in un-fired condition, all these years as I had several other 45s that I was well-accustomed to.....I know, I know...it's outright sinful and I ought to have my butt kicked.  Well, today was the day. I decided to take the 97 out to the range and put some rounds thru her to see what she could do....all I can say is; "impressive".   What a sweet shooter this gun is....even in bone stock configuration!  I should have know it would be....it's a CZ.

Well, I guess the only thing left to be seen is where in rotation your other .45's wind up.  Congrats on your now 7 yrs later new pistol first range day!  The 97 is a wonderful shooting pistol.

Wow, you really did let her just sit there.  Had you removed the factory grease way back when.  I am sure it was dry by now.
As longgonedaddy implied, I am sure your other .45s will see much more time in the dark.

I originally brought the gun home, opened up the case, looked/played with it a little, closed the case back up, and put in the safe.  There it sat until this morning...without a single round fired through it.
A couple of my gun buds wanted to do a ".45 day at the range" and we were all supposed to bring every .45 we own and shoot em.
So early this morning, I brought it out, cleaned/wiped it all down, oiled it in the likely wear spots, and headed on out to meet the guys at the range.
They are big 1911 gun nuts so I was really the odd-ball guy out there today.  They just kinda looked at me funny when I laid em out.
I had four 45s with me:  A custom Colt Combat Commander, a brand new Glock 30 Gen 4, a customized Springfield race gun, an S&W M&P and the CZ97BD.  I started off by putting 10 230gr RB rounds down the pipe of the Glock and I was ready to literally throw that POS away...LOL...definitely going to trade or sell it off at the next local gun show.  Doesn't fit my hand very well....too thick, and that new Glock stippling bites the living heck out of my hand to the point that after about 10 rounds, I was almost bleeding.  Definitely have to wear gloves to shoot that ugly thing.  The Commander used to be my cc gun many years back and still shoots just fine, but it's just single action and limited to 7 or 8 rounds. Put about 20 rounds thru it just to make sure all was working good. The race gun...well, it's a race gun...not much else to say about it.  The S&W shoots pretty good...no complaints on it. It's similar to my cc gun:  an M&P in .357 SIG.  However, the 97BD got the living heck shot out of it today with not one single failure of any kind.  Ran hard ball, JHP and SWC thru it....it ate it all and wanted more.  BTW, 200gr SWC in this gun is a tack driver...like I said, "Impressive"  The guys had never seen one before, or even heard of a "CZ".  I let em fire it and they were all impressed with it as well.  The 97 pretty much out-shined everything out there today.  Just cleaned her up and it will definitely be going back out there with me on the next trip.

Great report.  I find that most .45 enthusiasts are surprised by the stock 97B.  Once you get deep enough in the CZ obsession to send it out to be Cajunized then you will wonder why people still mess with traditional 45s.   But then again I am biased by 5 97Bs.  Congrats on the re-discovery!!

Every time I shoot my 97BD I wonder why I ever bother looking at a 1911. I added a CGW hammer and spring kit myself and sent the slide to CGW for the 1911 style barrel bushing and this this is laser accurate.

I just couldn't stand it even though it was raining....snuck outta the house and headed back over to the range all by myself.
Had the place all to myself due to the weather, and rattled off about 100 rounds of reloads and another box of American Eagle.  The 97 never hiccuped at all on anything I fed it.  I cannot get over how well this big gun shoots, especially in stock form.  It shoots darn near as good as my tricked out Commander.
Had to give it a good oiling, cleaning & wipe down as we both got a little damp while shooting from under the canopy...LOL...it was pouring down rain pretty good there for a while.  Nevertheless, I just kept shooting till I was outta ammo.
CGW is really not all that far from me, either.

^ That pretty much says it all...when a new pistol makes you go to the range in the rain and shoot it!   You're hooked on it.

Well, what would you expect.  It has been starving to death in your safe, for the last 7 years. :(

I have been avoiding threads on the 97... I don't need any more lust in my life.  Congrats on your re-discovery! This only further assures me that my pistol life is not complete until I have one of these pistols.

I actually didn't see the price and didn't ask as I really didn't need the temptation to bring home another .45   I may go back on Mon or Tues as I just found out it comes w/ night sites if he continues the sale thru the next week which he usually does.  Lowpriceguns in Bellevue, WA.  In store pricing only!  They also had a 75 compact, not sure on price.
