+ round extension mag reliability?
« on: April 22, 2021, 07:22:19 PM »
I researched P series (P07/P09/P10)mag extensions and decided to order some from a few different companies - some added rounds, some were just a pinky extension
- galloway
- Hyve (+3 for P10S)
- CZ factory (the + 2 extension that comes with 17 rd P10C mags - makes a 15 into a 17; a 19 into a 21))
- CZ parts (from CZ in Czech republic)

My question is how reliable are the + round extensions?  The + 2 offered by CZ I expect to have been tested and are good to go.  Mine just arrived and I will test them.  But what about the other aftermarket ones:  HBI, Hyve, Leapers/UTG (and any others you may have tried).  My only experience with mag extensions was spotty at best with my G43 (Pearce, magguts, and vickers)  - so spotty I would not use them for carry.  So, before I shoot some (now) expensive ammo confirming their reliability, what has been the communities experience with them?

I can only speak for the HBI +2 extensions. I have had zero problems with them with many thousands of rounds.

I run the Hyve +3s on my RAMI with no issues. Not a poly model, but at least it's indicative of manufacturer reliability.

My Carry Optics P10F uses Henning Walgren base pads and stock springs and followers for 22+1.

My CarryOptics P09 with CZ Custom basepad, 10 coil spring and trimmed follower ran reliably with 23+1. (But slide did not lock back)  Also My p10f did not like this configuration.  Think it has to do with the geometry of the feed ramp.

Both fit the USPSA mag gauge.

The polymer +2  pads on P09/10F mags will exceed the 141.25 mm limit (if that matters to you)

For my P10C I have mags with the Shield +5 extension on the 15 rnd’ers for a total of 20 rnds, and Springer +4 on a P-09/P10F mag for a total of 22.  I use them for USPSA whenever I shoot my P10C at a match. Zero problems with reliability.

For my Shadow 2 that I also compete with I run the 17-rnd MecGars with Taran Tactical Innovation (TTI) +5 with Grams followers and springs for 23 rnd capacity.

Since original post on this, I've purchased, and am now testing:
- CZ factory/OEM +2 (should be GTG as they use them to make 17 rd and 21 rd mags)
- hyve +3 (will shoot it some today)
- galloway +2 (similar in concept to CZ +2, but different shape)

Regarding the galloway +2 pads, I found a youtube video reveiw where the guy had feeding/extraction issues with them.  The back of the galloway pad contacts the backstrap as the mag is seated - pushing the mag forward a bit - I saw this too as I tested its fit.  He removed pad material so it does not contact as it feeds into magwell.  I did the same to mine, and removed a little material from the backstrap as well.  Now there is no contact as mag seats (will shoot it more today - but in 2 prior range sessions I had no issues with the galloway pads on 2 mags).   But the unmodified pad does contact the backstrap and it does slightly push mag forward as it seats.

I was able to shoot the 3 different mag extension base plates for my P-10S I highlighted previously (in my above posts).  They were all trialed at max capacity +1 (in the chamber).    So, it was 14 +1 using the CZ factory and galloway +2 extensions; and 15 +1 with the hyve.  Bottom line is they all worked fine:  loading to capacity, seating and locking in the gun, chambering 1st round (and all subsequent rounds), ejection fine and slide locked back on last round.  I only had time to run 1 full mag full through each, so not an extensive trial (ideally I'd run 3 or 4 full mags, but that's an expensive proposition these days).

And as I stated previously, I did modify the galloway pad back edge - as well as the lower edge of the back strap (where it had slight contact with the galloway pad).  Both of these mods eliminated any contact when inserting and locking in the mag.

I have a Galloway +2 on my P10-S.  Never had any feed issues with it, but I am only able to get +1 out of it.  I bought it to create room for my pinky, so the extra round wasn't a major concern.

with my CZ mags, the mag springs seem quite robust and can accommodate "+" round base plates - at least the 3 I;ve tried (+2 CZ & galloway, and +3 hyve).  And this is with the uplula (of course).  The fact that CZ themselves offer a factory +2 base plate suggests the mag springs are well designed.
