First time PD FMJs
« on: August 06, 2021, 09:25:37 AM »
I've loaded plenty of the PD 124gr JHPs but with availability being what it is, I bought 4000 of the 124 FMJs. Expecting I'll end up close to the JHP load, 4.5gr HP-38/231.  Looks like the bullet shape/ogive should allow for a longer OAl.  I've heard that some load out to 1.16" so will load a few dummy rounds to check max in my CZs.  Thoughts?

Every bullet requires a plunk test.  Please do that as well as your dummy rounds.  i would also recommend you running the load over a chrono to see where you are at.  A ladder would be good because maybe your gun is more accurate with a different load than the JHP.

They are good bullets but I found my gun likes the hollow points better.

I load PD FMJ for indoor range, where JHP are not allowed. They are OK and accurate for 50', but seating not as deep in the case and require a little more powder. I use TG. 3.5-3.6gr for JHP COAL 1.07" and 4.1 for FMJ COAL 1.150". Both 124gr bullets. Test accordingly for you powder.

Thoughts?

If you'll bother to read and digest all the information in the Stickies about loading, you'll see that better accuracy can be easily gained by simply seating your bullets at least 0.20" into the case. If you follow that advice, you won't end up with an OAL of 1.160". So my thoughts are that you should read the stickies.

However, as I remember, you can seat those PD FMJ at 1.160" and safely fire them in a CZ pistol. The ogive is such that it will safely allow firing without the hazard of an OOB condition.

Hope this helps.
